so, what do you guys use radar for? If you build it, how much do you build and where?

I use it to observe as much of the enemy as possible.

10 on Breast after the Fall of France covers the UK, Spain and much of the Eastern Atlantic.

10 in Konigsberg because I like always seeing what Soviet unit strengths are (God, I love counters...*cries as he thinks of HoI IV*) and that covers almost beyond Moscow!

If the Brits are still around I suppose you could put a few in the Benelux areas to help on intercepts along the channel. If you are on your heels in the air, a few in Germany proper will help.

I also stack them as much as possible when I take Newfoundland, Bermuda or Cuba, for the impending invasion of the USA. They also help fend-off the massive USAAF response.

That's about it. I wish techs would expand radar support beyond the province next to the stations, but the two province cover can turn the tide in the air. Even just one.

Oh wow ok haha

So is the strategy, build a few highly upgraded ones?

And for air. Let's say you have a 10 Provence front. If you want to give radar support to that front for air combat, should you just build a high level radar near it? Or should you have to build a few low level radar for that front ? I just don't understand how far radar helps for aircraft, and for what level out of 10 goes where and such

As far as I understand it, radar stations only support aerial combat in the province they are built in and the provinces immediately adjacent to them, regardless of tech levels. I don't think you really need more than one per province for the radar bonus. Building more than one in this case would be for continued radar coverage from the installations if they are damaged by enemy bombers.

I could easily be wrong on that point, but I'm fairly confident.

As to the radar revealing enemy information and positions beyond your normal range. The more you stack, the further you can see from that location. I believe it functions better than dropping smaller stations closer to the front.

I research it so I can put it on my fleet and on some of my fighters and bombers ;)

Im pretty much the same. I dont like to build Radar in territory that will soon be behind the lines (for example building any near the Maginot line) as I feel its a waste. I will build it on islands of places like Gibralter etc...

Hello again,

right now, I am playing in an italy game. I just want to hold my alps from the germans... (I am not joining the axis)

Currently, the entire line is fully defended. But, I need to be able to counter their air force. For the northern borders of italy, except for switzerland, I have level 4-5 Heavy AA installations. Further, on eastern side bordering Germany I have 6 interceptors and 4 tactical bombers. West side facing vichy france I have 2 interceptors.

My plan is simply to take Vichy Africa and hold the line in Italy.

I installed Radar in one of the border Alps provences, it is level 4 right now. I asked because, if it will not supply bonus in combat for all of my northeast air defense, perhaps I should then build some radar in other alps provences. I need all the help I can get for air superiority over Italy.

They currently are attacking the western airport, and have beaten down my two interceptors. They are now bombing my airbase there. That section has one radar installation at level 3.

In east flank, They are attacking some plains at the border, often bombing it. It is three tiles away from my radar station. So I guess that will not give radar help. But my interceptors have heavily damaged their bombers and they have stopped bombing after their first ground offence failed.

With your guys information, I think I will add a radar installiation for that provence that is being attacked. As for western front, perhaps that will just have to be lost in the air. I cannot afford to build any more interceptors. I am also having trouble using the interceptors, very difficult to do tell interceptors to manually attack incoming bombers. How can you do this except for being at speed 1?

I put them in an army group for the alps with the ground troops, and tried putting it on AI control , defensive. They intercepted enemies much better than me. But they are not helping in the other army group in the west, who are being beaten in the air. I will have to start another thread to ask for help on this.

Italy is woefully short on IC, especially compared to Germany. Id scrap the idea for Radar and build more INTs, and keep them up to date.

Hey can you go look at my newst thread about Air Force, maybe you can help!

Also, I stopped building radar, I cannot spare the resources anymore now that I am at war. (I did not expect the Germans to attack so well in France, I need help there)

This game really tends to try to dissuade you from building basically any sort of fixed thing. Forts only really help if you have an ungodly amount of them - and even then, if you lose the province that has the fort in it... or the forts get bombed away... you're screwed. Radar only affects 4-5 tiles at the most - but a really good one costs as much as a battle cruiser - even if my mighty battle cruiser dies after killing 2 convoys, it's dealt more damage than that Radar likely ever would + plus it may do even more! :D Provincial AA is worse than useless. Coastal forts, despite being hugely important in WW2, are also quite useless, worse than useless really...

Not really. AA isn't "worse than useless", it's merely "useless". It builds some Artillery Practical, besides doing trivial amounts of ORG damage to strategic bombers on the first raid or two before it gets bombed into complete ineffectiveness, and it repairs for free after that inevitably happens. I wouldn't count that as "worse".

Placing one Radar station in the province, instead of AA, will give your INT a 10% combat bonus (or higher, depending on your Doctrines) during Intercept missions. I often place a Level 4-5 radar installation in either Brest or Calais as soon as FRA capitulates, which effectively lets me see most of the UK shipping and troop movements in the Channel and major coastal regions of the UK. On the other hand, if I'm going from the fall of France straight on to Sea Lion, I won't need the radar installations, because there won't be anything left to see by the time they complete. On the eastern front, things tend to move far too quickly for any radar installation to remain useful long enough to be worth the cost. I just use aircraft for recon.
