Hi,

I'm really struggeling with my radars/sonars. I don't find the submarines unless they "drive" straight up to my ships. As soon as I fire my torpedos they turn around and vanish. I've used planes and choppers to drop those "sonars" with no luck.

I also struggle finding enemy airplanes. I got it all turned on (radar etc.) and still I can't seem to notice the enemy planes until they are almost on top of me. Well.. and then its usually too late. First thing, and most of the time the only thing i see is a enemy rocket coming straight in my face :)

So.. if any of you pro's want to spend a few minutes explaining how this works, that would be great! :)

Hi,

On radar, I can't possibly explain it better than Dave did in this thread.

Sonar and sub hunting, I'll give it a go. Have you tried Tutorial 6: Sonar? It tells the story from a submarine's perspective, but sonar works much the same way for a surface ship.

Generally, the sonars on your surface ships are there more or less to tell you "you are soon dead" (unless you crawl and use deployable sonar array). Your weapon against submarines are aircraft with torpedoes and sonobuoys. Loads of sonobuoys. When i think about it, loads of torpedoes, too.

Here's how I do it if I am not in a ridiculous hurry and have to hope for luck: Send whatever ASW (anti-submarine warfare) aircraft you may have to the region where you want to search. Select the special orders panel (P), and draw a rectangle in the region where you suspect (or know) the sub is. Not too large, not too narrow.

Wait while the aircraft spreads its sonobuoys. Then we detect a sub. Low time compression. Deep breath. Now keep using the same aircraft in the same area to drop buoys in the vicinity of the sub, until you get an exact fix. If you have more ASW aircraft available, bring them in to patrol the area; they may be needed.

Select your ASW a/c (lowering the speed may be a good idea especially if it's fixed-wing), and right click on the sub, and fire a torpedo from as short a distance as you can. Wait and see. If the sub starts running away, move the a/c in front of the sub, and attack it again.

Look at the Battle report whether torps miss (bad luck), countermeasures/soft kill took it (again bad luck, but you would hit) or if they ran out of fuel (too far away).

When the sub is about to get too far away from the buoys, drop a few more just around it. Rinse and repeat. If you run out of torps, bring in reinforcements and keep going. Sooner or later its luck and countermeasures run out.

Good huntin'!

I tend to rely on the helos to fix a sub's position. ASW aircraft drop a ring of bouys around the suspected position to avoid it slipping away, while a helo drops buoys inside the ring. Once detected, I put the helo right on top of it, tell it to drop to 10m altitude, stop and deploy the dipping sonar. Once deployed I always get a fix on the sub.

Pop the torpedoes from the helo and follow up with the ASW aircraft.

Use youre AWACS at max height, but also stealth fighters are hard to detect!

on ther reverse what is the best way to avoid your subs being detected.... I've played the Russian mission 3 several times now and the NATO helos must be psychic because no matter how deep or shallow or what bearing I give my subs or even what speed the tricky BSTRDS find and kill at least one sub... which is irritating given that I used to play dangerous waters and be quite adept at hiding the Akula II in the thermals and getting my own way :(
