So it looks with VV that the game works OK.

I've dug out my Encyclopaedia Britannica (1951 edition, complete with some wonderfully politically incorrect statements) compared maps, got a spreadsheet so I can tie up AUC dates to BC, poured some wine, taken a deep breath.

I tend to just start at the beginning and only Rome; maybe I should give King Pyrrhus a chance to fulfill his potential - "the most brilliant of the military adventurers whom the disturbed times following the death of Alexander the Great had brought into prominence."

I tend to run the game fast, then stop sort out omens, armies, appointments etc. Not very subtle I guess.

How and who do you guys play?

Gonna try Vae Victis - haven't played in a while, but I usually play Rome. Think I launched one Carthage game.

Epirus is probably fun.

I usually rip along as fast as warranted. In Crusader Kings I'm at Extremely Fast all the time, every second. EU 3 is a fast setting. HOI2 I probably play the slowest, actually, especially after losing scads of Tac bombers in Armageddon (finally saw that massed troops could put holes in my planes).

Your message settings affect things, too.

I basically always play at the first available date, on maximum speed (except in VIP, where that causes problems with events), and just pause whenever I have to do anything especially difficult, time-consuming, or though-requiring.

I also start playing at earliest date, except if I want to play with a certain ruler or historical character.

Since I never play multiplayer (which needs more discipline with gamespeed and pauses) I always play at max speed (or almost) and pause to do stuff.

My favourites are Rome and Egypt. The latter has to face some epic wars with the Seleukids since the very first moment, before you can even manage properly your realm, which is challenging.

Earliest date also. Haven't been playing Rome since the summer, but I'm planning on giving VV chance soon, so maybe I'll get more into it then. I also plan to play as Parthia at one point, so for that I'll pick some suitable date from later on.

When playing as Carthage i like to play at a later date just when they lost the 3 big islands to Rome. So i try to colonize Iberia and try to retake the islands and bring Rome to its knees and break there realm.
But playing as Rome i play at the earliers date. And Averni just before Ceaser's invasion.

Very fun to play as Rome, to be sure.
But I think Macedonia might be one of the easiest country to play as, since the Greek religion has so much power right from the start.

Though I actually can't make up my mind about something:
What form of government is more stable, monarch or republic?

Well I still think it's quite a nice game. Just not a popular as EU 2 or 3. About the same as Ageod's ACW game which is their most popular.

My Epirus got half Italy before keeling over so I've given him a bit of a boost over history.

Still seems fast then stop is the popular way to play so thanks for all your replies.

When I was new with the game I played as a major power, like Rome or Carthage, now I usually play as Greek minors (Crete is one of my favourites) or as barbarians (conquering Gaul as the Germans or Britons is quite fun and conquering the Bosporan Kingdom and modern day Georgia as Rhoxolani also offers a nice challenge).

Though I actually can't make up my mind about something:
What form of government is more stable, monarch or republic?

That depends on how much effort you put into it. :)

I normally play on fast as Rome or one of the Hellenic nations, but I pause a lot.

I take a very hands-on role in the Republics, as I enjoy the political manuevering. But that takes a lot of time, though it can help keep a republic very stable.

You aren't the only one, I play slowest speed during wars and turbulent times and only bump it up to the second speed during periods of peace. For nation choice I prefer one of the Hellenic nations.

In general, I play around mid-high speed durring peace, and mid-low speed durring war, pausing often. About once per month I cycle through character objectives and loyalty, etc, while checking for open offices. I wish there was an Icon up top that told you there were offices/governorships availavable to re-assign...

I have found that playing as a greek nation based around greece (any of the Greek minors, Pontus, Bythinia, Pergamon) can be fairly easy. It is tough going early on, but once you get to a certain point, you have so much manpower that you can literally steam roll over anything in your expansion. Pontus is probably my ALL time favorite country to use. I have only played the game as Pontus, Sparta, Macedonia, Eqypt, and Rome.

I am trying out Carthage and finding it to be fun. Its a pain to convert your existing provinces from Numidian to Carthaginian though....

I have never really played as a minor barbarian nation. I tried once as the Picts or something (long live SCOTLAND!), but it took soooooo long to get the civ up to 50 and be able to colonize, that it just didn't seem worth it.

How and who do you guys play?

I just bought this game yesterday and im sitting here at work now pretending to do something useful but in reality im trying to find more info about the Roman Empire and the schemings the leaders did and all that stuff.

It kinda got me inspired in the way that i got loads of characters to play around with, each with their own factions, friends and rivals. This really seems to be an interesting part of the game!

So the way im gonna play my first game as Romans i will just do whatever the characters and the senate wants me to do. Ofc most of those who characters who are legates commanding an army will try to win battles, and wants power and to be popular... So i would play the game like i suppose they would have done!

It's almost like a multiperson RPG for me! So maybe some day i get a character that i will mess around with totally, because he is mad like Caligula or Nero, and then i will do some really nasty stuff. I will also try to play some characters smart, like Octavian type of people and to expand and start with making them Dux in a region with great skills.

So i will change my style of play according to each character. I think that could turn out to be an interesting game.
