In that case, is flying bomb effectiveness increased by assigning leaders and letting them gain org, or is it all the same to just fire them as soon as they're built?

I guess they would be a bit more effective if you have a carpet bomber command them.

There is no surrender event for Italy.

2. Playing as Japan, is it worth it to liberate India and the Dutch East Indies into puppets with the aim of getting a larger proportion of resources from them?

As a long-time player of Japan, I'd say no. India may not give you as much Manpower as China, but if you are going to fight the Soviets, you'll need all of it. The Dutch East Indies have lots of resources, so it might be worthwhile to liberate them IF you aren't playing For the Motherland. In FtM the Strategic Resources of Chinchona, Rubber, Gold, and Oil Refinery present in the former Dutch colony are way too valuable to give to a puppet. Since you aren't a faction leader you don't get the bonus if they aren't directly owned by you.

Was thinking about getting Hearts of Iron II (I've played HOI3 for a while now) for some of the options in the expansions and the additional mods available for that one and not III. I've never played II before and I'd like a basic rundown of the major differences between the games, both advantages and disadvantages.

Hoi2 is less detailed and more simplistic. That's pretty much it. After playing hoi3 its pretty hard to go back to hoi2 since hoi3 offers vastly more imo. Especially the dynamic tech system where you aren't permanently crippled if you are playing as most countries and can instead realistically built up experience in areas you choose to concentrate on.

This reminds me of another Q I had. Is there anything like hoi2's DAIM for hoi3?

Two Qs, both playing as Japan:

1. I have taken all the VPs and navel bases and all the provinces I could actually send my forces to in the dutch east indies area, but there are still provinces (the ones with woefully low infrastructure) which are owned by the UK and Netherlands. Is there any way for me to get these? In particular the Netherlands - since their only presence on the map is one island in pan America which is not even a VP - why can I not annex them or acquire territory or anything? I did add the acquire territory goal for the east indies.

2. I found it extremely difficult to take India - supply wise. A lot of my units simply could not be supplied well enough to ever attack. I landed marines in every port and took all the land around a pocket of 40 or so provinces in the north. Since there were plenty of naval bases to spare and the infrastructure in India is pretty good - why on Earth were so many of my units not in supply? I had 100s of spare conveys and have taken all of the Pacific and there were no conveys being lost.

In the end, I ended up using paratroopers to land on the provinces to take them, and since UK troops were encircles got ages it was not too difficult to defeat them. But it's pretty ridiculous that it came to that. I did not even have my entire army there, only 10 Mnt, 15 Mar and 5 Arm divisions with a few bombers.

I expected that. What do the expansions for II offer that III simply doesn't have?

I haven't played any hoi3 mods yet, nor many hoi2 to be honest.

Have they already surrendered? Have they surrendered before you were at war with them? If they are a GiE, they can only surrender again, if you take out the whole faction.

You could build infrastucture in the adjacent level 1 provinces, that you already control. But that's a purely cosmetical and tedious process.

Since there were plenty of naval bases to spare and the infrastructure in India is pretty good - why on Earth were so many of my units not in supply?

Maybe you have to manually add supply convoys to all those ports. Japan always had problems, because their main supply node changed to some backwater province on the chinese coast. Just use the supply/naval map mode.

They seemed like they were being sent there, but idk. Is there a possibility that the game is prone to creating vast backlogs of required supply which stuffs things up?

Also, which file do I edit and what setting do I change to alter how many supplies/fuel each level of naval base can ship in? If I could just increase it by 50%, I'd be pretty happy...

Something really weird just happened.

US landed in Netherlands (Europe) and are fighting it out with the Germans. All of a sudden I get a netherlands liberated, and acquire territory on them. Now they are my puppet, and I have annexed the dutch east indies. Well that's interesting!

Edit: Now the really funny part about this is that the US has an absolutely massive amount of divisions which are now out of supply and stuck in Netherlands. I guess it would only be fair to give holland back to the allies.

An even more important question now.

Again, as Japan, I've declared war on USA, owning it up - must have sunk at least 30-40 US ships now in the Pacific including about 5 carriers. I myself have 7x fleets of 3 carriers and 3 light cruisers per fleet, keep them close together. So that's 21 carriers and 42 CAGs.

Now all of a sudden I get jumped by a US fleet with 7 carriers and about 5 escort carriers, rest are destroyers and light cruisers and transports. They get much better positioning score on my fleets (all fighting together in the same naval zone) and tear my fleet apart - I lose about 30% ships including carriers, and the rest are badly damaged.

I load up as USA to have a look because I am just in WTF mode, and they have a massive megastack of ships (that just attacked and defeated all 7 of my fleets at once) with a hull penalty of 80.

Does anyone want to explain this to me? How should I approach the situation - I was under the impression that hull penalty was bad (not to mention having a leader that can command a mere 12 ships compared to the 60ish the US AI had), yet it seemed to make this superstack invincible as they all quickly and simultaneously moved into position to attack my ships and yet not a single one of mine was in position to attack theirs?

(Also, sorry for the triple post).

(Also, sorry for the triple post).

I have noticed that positioning is only calculated from the first fleet joining the battle. So any additional reinforcements that are sent there don't add to it.

But besides this, positioning seems to be pretty irrelevant when it comes to carrier fleets, and AA is not really effected by stacking so when it comes to carrier warfare you generally just want as many (AA) ships as possible in your big deathpile...

Also 42 CAGs should be getting -105% efficiency from stacking during the CAG-duty bombing. You generally don't want more then 10 CVs = 20 CAGs in the same battle at once.

It seems USA AI is very close to that optimum number employing 19 CAGs in total.

Since 2 CAGs = roughly 1 air unit, shouldn't the reference be "no more than 6 air units, e.g. 12 CAGs, instead of 20 CAgs" ? Or does the penalty during a Sea battle is different ?

CAGS on cag duty dont get the same stacking penalty every other misson gets, its some thing like 5% of what it should be. as to death stacks, you're got to get it out of supply, or build a fleet to match.

When ever I try to take any form of diplomatic action the icon is highlighted but when I click on them nothing happens. Is there any reason for this? It's not just Yugoslavia, it happens with all countries. The autotrade checkbox is also unable to be un-ticked.

Since 2 CAGs = roughly 1 air unit, shouldn't the reference be "no more than 6 air units, e.g. 12 CAGs, instead of 20 CAgs" ? Or does the penalty during a Sea battle is different ?
Should be is far from how it actually works in many cases, and CAGs is one of them.

When striking naval targets at sea CAGs get 1/4:th the normal stacking, or 2.5% per airwing.

For all other missions such as ground attack, port strike or interception CAGs get the normal stacking (10% per airwing).

Is there any penalty of having undeployed units?
No penalty except that they get assigned officers even if undeployed (so your ratio will be reduced). And ofcourse that they don't start regaining their org (and strength if reserves) until deployed.
