I have a question.

Is loading up on unique MaA units -- like, say, Varangian Guard -- and then dropping the tradition but retaining the units only available via that tradition a bug, or a "game feature"?
i dont think it is a bug. you could say they are "maintaining" what they got already. but cant handle recruiting new ones
even if its weird.

You cannot recruit new regiments. only upgrade increase their size.

Oh, good to know. So, if I want only one regiment of Huscarls, I can "delete" the Hird tradition after I recruited one unit ?

Yes you can. but you will only be able to max that out from 1/5 etc. and never make a new one. if u delete it to make space it will be "lost".

This is completely up to you, of course, but I personally would never delete Hirds.

Why? Because Hirds not only gives your children a much higher chance to become "strong," but it also increases the chance of getting "Rowdy" children by 300%.

And unlike Warrior Culture and Coastal Warriors, Hirds gives every member of your culture +2 prowess (and +1 knights).

My point being that it is ideal for a Knight-centric run, whereas Coastal Warriors is more about MaA, and Warrior Culture is just a worse Hirds with a slightly less severe downside (-10% tech research, instead of -15%). However, I've found that you can bypass the negative modifier on the tech research by Hybridizing your culture with another.

But again, it's totally up to you (and if you're not focusing on knights, its arguably strictly worse than Coastal Warriors).

Personally I don't like this tradition (and other similar traditions) cuz it debuff content trait and I like pensive more than rowdy but their heavy infantry unlock are excellent so there might be situation that I would adopted it to recruit some unit then remove it to not get these debuff.

In the screenshots below, I don't understand what means "Count X has allegiance towards the Grand Duchy of Livonia / Lithuania rather than you". I own both titles and the second one (Lithuania) is my primary title. Any clue ?

In short it means that your Vassal has sworn fealty to the title, and not to the duke/king whatever.

In your case... do you have Feudal elective succession?

Does the AI ever accept conversion to get out of a holy war? I feel they should depending on the circumstances, like if they have no allies, no remaining lands and no hope of beating back the invaders, but I don't think I've seen it happen,

Also provided they're not zealous and all that

Never seen it happen in 2.800 hours of playtime when I waged a holy war.
So I suppose it is a mechanic implemented to prevent a player from a game over, as the player can't continue as an unlanded character.

Too bad. I don't like how holy wars ammount to total dismantling of existing dynasties. It feels like it loses out on a bit of potential gameplay, like using the claims of the "converted" half of a dynasty to subjulgate the rest without holy wars. I mean, you can still do it by inviting to court, granting land and demanding conversion, but that seems roundabout.

Time to go scour the mod screen again I guess.

In CK2, what happened a lot was what I call "11th Hour Conversions". I', waging a Holy War against another realm, and I'm up to +98 War score, and the other guy converts right out of the blue, invalidating my Holy War. That happened literally millions of times...

Thought that happened in CK3 too...

how does non ruler ai get hunter traits? would prolific hunters affect anyone but rulers of the culture? or does ai characters go *hunting* behind the scene?
Events can do that. Either add a Hunter trait to an existing character, or create a new character directly with the trait. Haven't looked into it much.

Guests (and maybe wanderers?) can get a random trait once in a while, which can be a Hunter trait (depends on their personality though). If their culture has Prolific Hunters, then they are 5 times more likely to get the Hunter trait (or increase its rank if they already have it).

Then there are those that participate in a hunt. A hunt can have up to 11 participants, besides the liege.
Prolific Hunters give the participants of a hunt a 75% chance to get a slightly higher progression to the next Hunter trait rank.

I had it happen once. It gives you a choice to either stop the war or continue and receive a level of devotion penalty if I remember correctly.

Could be that I only used christian and muslim religions myself in the beginning of my ck3 playtime.
I mostly used pagan faiths then, with Asatru being the majority in vanilla ck3 and with mods even more pagan faiths. As mods give me more tenets for pagan faiths, christian and muslim ruler tend to hate me even more.
And of course I always reform my pagan faiths to 'female dominated'.
Maybe that's why my opponents never convert.

Why is my court grandeur dropping so much during succession?

I didn't get a screenshot of the previous ruler's court, but it was baseline ~9 with the same expected value of 10 (which is absurd for my eleventh century, moderately sized empire, but whatever). When the kid ruler took over it dropped to the value in the attached screenshot. The court amenities were all dropped to the current values automatically; I didn't touch them. They were mostly 4's before succession, with maybe a 3 in one of them. The capital didn't move, and the kid inherited all of the holdings of the previous ruler. My current income is positive (and was positive before succession).

The end result here up with a -60 malus on my ruler's opinion, which seems severe to me. I mean that independence faction was happening regardless and this entire situation is mostly the result of my risk taking around the succession, but -60? For no apparent reason? Really? The -60 most likely guarantees a second independence faction after the first, even after I cave in to the liberty faction. I do not love Royal Court . . . .

Why is my court grandeur dropping so much during succession?
I would guess dread and tyranny.
Code:
grandeur_loss_on_succession_value = {
    value = -10
    if = { # 100 Dread makes you lose 5 more grandeur
        limit = {
            dread > 0
        }
        subtract = {
            value = dread
            divide = 20
        }
    }
    if = { # 100 Tyranny makes you lose 10 more grandeur
        limit = {
            tyranny > 0
        }
        subtract = {
            value = tyranny
            divide = 10
        }
    }
    if = {
        limit = {
            exists = primary_heir
            primary_heir = {
                has_trait = ambitious
            }
        }
        multiply = 0.5
    }
    if = {
        limit = {
            exists = primary_title
            primary_title = {
                has_order_of_succession = election
            }
        }
        multiply = 0.5
    }
}

Thanks for posting the code! Feel free to ignore the follow up if I’m putting you out….

The previous ruler would’ve had a negligible amount to tyranny but a substantial amount of dread (generating piety via executions to reform asartu and establish holy order; not a learning guy). For the sake of discussion, let’s say 100 dread.

The current ruler is a typical fourteen-year-old: callous, arbitrary, and angry. No one’s much impressed. He only has 1 dread.

Court grandeur is measured from 0 to 100. Again for sake of discussion, let’s assume the previous ruler had 90 grandeur. My current ruler has 25 grandeur. So I lost 65 grandeur.

When the new ruler takes over grandeur is going to drop 10 points (value = -10) just because it’s a new ruler

Then there’s a comment that says 5 points for 100 dread, which seems to to jibe with the code. So here I lost another 5.

Next is the loss for tyranny, which I’m pretty sure the previous ruler had less than 100. But even if he did, it’s still only 10 points.

So am I misreading the code? Or is something else negatively impacting court grandeur?

Well, I'm understanding it exactly like you.

After looking a bit more, I found that this only happens if the primary heir doesn't have a royal court of their own.

Which made me think: since you said the court amenities changed on their own, does that mean by any chance that your heir had his own royal court?
Because then, maybe he just inherited the court grandeur from his own court.
I don't know if that's intended though.
