When mobilized, are all reservist brigades always infantry only?

Is it a good idea to keep only artillery and cavalry as standing army during peacetime, and use the mobilized brigades to fill the role of infantry when a war breaks out?

How should I keep my peacetime armies? Divided into groups of brigades garrisoned here and there or massive, unified armies? Should I keep them at the border or inside the territory?

There are lots of wars you don't need to moblize for. ;) That means it's best to have infantry in your standing armies. Where to keep them: just make sure it is in provinces where they'll suffer no attrition (specially in the early phases of the game).

Adding to this, once I get sufficiently large, I do tend to keep a reservist support group (engineers, artillery, dragoons) in back in the middle of my nation with just a few infantry. My other armies remain well-balanced and do the bulk of the fighting (particularly in limited wars) so that I don't have to mobilize for small engagements, not to mention rebels. The reservist support group only comes up to the front when I mobilize, getting split into subunits and picking up reserve brigades on their way to reinforce my regulars.

Does anyone know more tricks to control stupid Capitalist AI? God, do I hate dumb factory spam when demand and prices for cars or rádios is astronomic... NF usually only Works well BEFORE factories are too occupied with craftsmen, destroying factories usually don´t work. They will simply build another stupid factory after you destroy them.
You either play with Planned Economy or play with State Capitalism and every time they build a factory just close it and fill bar with the maximum of factories that can be built. In State Capitalism, Capitalists can only open factories, they can`t reopen them nor upgrade them thus if the bar of maximum factories per state is full with opened and closed factories they will not open any other factory.

This will not work for interventionism.

I'm China, with access through Mongolia. Anyone have any idea why I can't move units into Bhutan, Sikkim or Nepal, despite being at war with all three?

And the modifier.

}
Even if population doesn`t assimilate when they are on their own core inside Austria there is a vast amount of different population and they tend to move between provinces and that is when they get assimilated to south german.I`ve loaded a late game Danubian Federation to see how they were doing and I`ve seen that the south germans had a far larger of the population share then they had at the beginning of the game.

This is meant to stop assimilation even if pops aren`t on their own cores.Just so I don`t stop all assimilation I made a list of all pops that are to be targeted by this assimilation debuff.

Thanks for answers. So the reservist troops, it seems, are always infantry only. So I do have to maintain a real army with professional infantry, instead of just professional artillery and cavalry and rest being peasant conscripts in times of war. :D

I'm China, with access through Mongolia. Anyone have any idea why I can't move units into Bhutan, Sikkim or Nepal, despite being at war with all three?

Nepal and Sikkim are on the Indian side of the Himalayas, which is impassable, so you cannot move your troops there unless you first march through Burma, and then the British-owned Assam and then the Gangetic plain (either through outright war or conquest with them, or through military access).

Not sure about Tibet though, since it is not an impassable area at all and in fact borders China Proper. Why are your troops unable to move there?

Excuse me while I say "Huh?" ;)

I can move into mountains though, at least in my own territory. Do I have to have special units, or higher /something-or-other/ or what?

Okay, I've got it: Military access through Afghanistan (my sphere) and Panjab and I can get there via the key province of Faizabad. :)

Thanks, I'd completely forgotten that some mountain ranges were *completely* impassible.

Oh, and I could move into Tibet with no problem. Burma, though, refuses me entry as they're allied to one of my enemies, though not at war with me.

That guy seems to have only a limited understanding of the game. He makes a lot of incorrect assumptions, and for some reason went to war without any recon.

There's a bit to remember with battles in Victoria 2: unlike all of Paradox's other games, in Victoria 2 a defender only uses their defense stat and attackers only use their attack stat. Unit stats don't affect how much damage they take, only how much they deal (although your Military Tactics level, and having a fort in the province, affect how many soldiers you lose).

Other than that, what do you need to know?

Everything. I have no pre knowledge of combat...in CK2 i used to win only by having a bigger army, so i never learnt the combat there. I really want to get it here tho, with Victoria 2...but i need to understand the basics first, then the more complex stuff.

I've read some on the unit setup, that horses attack first then infrantry? But i don't really understand xP

There was another chap who made a fairly detailed series of videos I was hoping to find, but I think they were released along time ago and I couldn't find them. He illustrates with a battle on the ottoman/russian border and gets into rotating in and out of armies, which it took me ages to discover which changes everything, if you don't know. Any clues?

I found this video for a noobish explanation fairly decent, although he as you correctly point out, go to war with 0 reckon. Anything to do with available cavalry units perhaps?

Well to be fair, in basic CK2 there's not much you really can do other than have a bigger army. Commander traits can obviously make a difference, but the really big swings in power only come if you look up the Tactics file and use the retinue system to make flanks dedicated to getting a one of few particular overpowered tactics to activate.

The way it works is that units in Victoria 2 have a Maneuver value, which means they can attack that many squares to the right or left rather than just directly in front of them. Cavalry have more maneuver than infantry, so when placed on the flanks allow multiple units to attack the same brigade, breaking it more quickly and turning the enemy's line. You also have artillery firing from the back line; they start out about as strong as infantry, but later in the game they completely wreck the enemy.

So therefore, the trick is to have an army with enough front line units (infantry and cavalry) to keep the enemy from eliminating your front line and exposing the artillery behind it (which will not fight nearly as well from the front line), while still having enough artillery to obliterate the enemy army, and not suffer crippling attrition while moving through the enemy's territory.

Hm, how do i put my infrantry and cavalry on the front line/flanks? Does it happen automatically?

It automatically places units where they do best (except for Guards, who get placed in the middle like infantry despite their higher maneuver). You couldn't move them around if you wanted to.

My key points that I *try* to remember with V2

  • Defense is king
  • Have reserves. Armies should travel in pairs when possible.
  • Recon values for faster province takeover.
  • Have at least as many infantry as artillery to protect your artillery.
  • Have at least one or more horse units per army for flanking
  • Triple check that your armies are being properly funded before engaging.
  • Keep an eye on your org at all times.
  • Avoid attacking in easily defensible terrain.
  • When necessary, bait enemy armies with weak forces in defensive terrain, then counter-attack with fast reserves. Enemies die quickly this way.

Shouldn't be -- even uncivs have the "Cavalry" base unit available with its recon stat of 1.

True..but recon isn't something I found to be an obvious stat to go for..If you only have 1 stack, your options are limited, I'd go for the horse with the better stats over the recon value..

Anyway, perhaps a noob, perhaps a man who just loves a good authentic non OP'ed fight? Still think he brings some things to the table needlesly. :)
