Thanks for the replies.

Here's another question; I've heard that the Vicky economy is pretty fragile, and as it gets longer into the game, I see hundreds of millions of pounds piling up in my coffers being stagnant and not being used for anything. Is this something that will cause the economy to crash and cause me problems later on? Should I ramp up some social reforms to get more money flowing into the economy?

(As aforementioned, I am using PDM but not sure how much of a difference it makes.)

EDIT: Also, will bankrupt factories close on their own, do they each need to be manually destroyed?

Depends on who built them.

Having large cash reserves doesn't hurt your economy. However, it won't help your economy to grow either. Negative tariffs are quite good in such situations, as well as smaller taxes (preferably middle and upper class).
Apart from specific reforms like schools and health care, you should never enact social reforms without being directly forced by people shooting at your troops ((disclaimer: PDM and it's iterationsmight or might not chang the balance here))

This might be a really stupid question but how do I actually gain access to more goods? If my pop/factories needs 500 coal and I have access to 50 (my own production only) how can I increase the access? Is my population too poor to buy it? How do I deal with this? Am I industrialising too quickly?

Coal is in high demand and the supply is about 1500 lower than the demand globally, I guess this does kind of explain it but I just want to know if there's any other way for me to gain access to more coal other than simply waiting. The whole situation sucks because I need coal to make cement and I need cement to make..... a lot of things. Basically I can't do any industrial activity because I can't get any coal.

I mentioned sphering last because you have to be a great power to do it. It will definitely help, but in the long run you'll be more productive if you hold any nearby coal provinces yourself.

guys just a quick question, when it comes to factories, how and why should I build a particular factory? Ive been reading guides but my factories always go bust. Im not sure what to do.

We really need more information -- what country are you playing?

General tips are: when you build a factory, check the trade screen and look at demand. Build in places where you get the synergy bonus (cement factories in states with coal RGOs, as an example). Don't build too many factories too fast; you won't have enough workers to staff them all. Start with one or two in your most important few states; as those develop, continue from there.

Are there any modifiers to reduce RGO size? I checked my RGO sizes and they are enormous, I need 1m people to staff a single province. Is this it? Is Pennsylvania never going to be fully staffed?

The first thing you do is build factories to meet internal demand. Liquor should probably be your first consumer goods factory, but you'll probably want a cement factory first. Try to get a machine parts factory early on as well.

Other than that, it's a question of what you can get the resources to build. Furniture and regular clothes both see a lot of consumption, and wine, glass, and fabric are very reliable as well.. You only really need one lumber mill, but being able to make a good amount of steel is helpful. The Production window will tell you how much of a given good is made in your country, and how much it uses. If you're making more than you use, but your factories don't have unsold merchandise, then you're successfully exporting and are safe to expand those factories.

As for RGO size, don't worry: not being fully staffed is fine. In A House Divided, you get large reductions in RGO size as you get more technology, but Heart of Darkness removes that since there's no upside to reducing the RGO's size.

In Vicky 2-HoD (almost) each country have another flag that it should be (e.g. Russia has UK's, UK has Rebels', Portugal has Hungary's etc..).
Do you have any hint how should I fix it?

What decides a colony's state religion? I released a few colonies as a Muslim Arabia and all of them were Protestant. I also released Yugoslavia in a recent NNM game and it was Orthodox but I was a Sunni Arab Union, so what gives? Is there a way to change the released states religion?

Had Peru as a puppet state when forming Gran Colombia, but it didn't join the Union (unlike Costa Rica, who did for some reason), a few years later they declare war on me for their cores. It even changed them to the Proletarian Dictatorship like I was, but for some reason they didn't stay a satellite when I became Gran Colombia. WAD or not?

Using PDM and not a Great Power, if that's important.

There's nothing in the event code about Peru joining Gran Colombia; it was its own viceroyalty, after all. You may have lost it as a satellite due to the diplomacy wonkyness when switching TAGs. The conventional wisdom is to save the game immediately before and after forming any union and then quit and load the after-formation save.

What decides a colony's state religion? I released a few colonies as a Muslim Arabia and all of them were Protestant. I also released Yugoslavia in a recent NNM game and it was Orthodox but I was a Sunni Arab Union, so what gives? Is there a way to change the released states religion?

All tags, whether existing or not, are initialised upon game load based on their history files. It's stupid, especially when one's roleplaying, but I'd recommend just ignoring it for the most part since religion doesn't have a huge factor in Victoria 2 anyway. This is also why releasing nations is bad in general, other than the diplomatic upkeep to keep them happy, you can't even determine what techs they will start off with, or if they will even be civilized or not.

Also, I've been having both capitalist and state built factories not automatically close down despite being bankrupt for over a year. Does such a function even exist, or is there something to swtich it on?

All the micromanagement is really annoying me. :S

If by close, you mean shut down permanently and free up the slot, I genuinely don't think it exists. You have to do it, unfortunately. It's why HOD puts a maximum of six factories built in states by capitalists; the other two slots are for the high tech factories that ordinarily never get built.

Does this mean if you have a Liberal gov obsessed with closing factories and then not allowing you to re-open or delete them, you are screwed?

I agree with SweetHalcy, micro really irritates me as well!
