So after a fuckton of trouble with mods, Victoria 2 finally gave up and just doesn't work anymore.

I have the Steam version of the game. I tried deleting my Victoria 2 folder in /SteamApps/common/Victoria 2, but it still crashes when I reinstall the game. What do I do to stop this? I wiped every last bit of Victoria 2 content from my computer, all the mods and backups and folders and it STILL doesn't work. How can the game be crashing on a fresh, completely vanilla plate?

Post in tech support. This thread is strictly for gameplay questions.

So What's the basis for your nation being in the buying order for goods? I'm in about 1910 I think it was, trying to update my army I finally researched some military it's as advanced as possible by tech now but I only had like 16 brigades of mostly artillery with some infantry(I guess my infantry brigades and cavalry got destroyed in the war with brazil or maybe got accidentally deleted when i demobilized) So I was trying to build some guard units and a tank, found out that there are no barrel factories in the world yet so I had to cancel that, but I spent 3 years waiting for the guard units to buy luxury clothes and looked up in the trade menu what the problem was and apparently there's none available for my nation. I don't think there's any major wars going on at the time. Also I suddenly went from having most of my pops getting all their basic needs(or life needs, whatever the second one is) and saw that my nation can't get some goods I need. My idiot capitalists once I let them free to build stuff have been building a ton of somewhat stupid factories, dye and fertilizer and cement, I'm guessing the factories are using up my national supply of certain goods like coal and fish that I remember being in deficit for my people, but still wondering, why can't I just buy enough anyway? I'm number 5 in prestige, I thought that's what it goes by? And even if it goes by industrial score I'm number 9 in that, only militarily am I a bit low, only 16, overall I'm 9/10 keeps going back and forth.

Yes it is OVERALL score that counts, a Paradox dev just confirmed this very recently in a post I saw too.
This is a really horrible way of running an economy but that has been discussed to death and will be again, just not here.
So basically just do your best to keep clawing your up the ranks.

Could anyone give me a few tips for playing as Ireland?

It's my first Victoria 2 game so not 100% sure im doing things right.

I've started off by trying to develop industry a bit as well as building railroads but i want to try and win a war to raise my prestige and i'm finding it hard to find a nation to go to war with who isn't linked to a Great Power in some way.

I did try conquering Madagscar but ended up with France invading Ireland so no luck there.

Any tips would be appreciated.

Unfortunately, this is a little bit how things worked. Minor powers, such as your released Ireland, get shunted aside for the Great Britains of the day to take what they want. Your hopes are in becoming a great power yourself, and then being able to use the sphere system to your advantage. Before you become a great power, things will be very difficult for you.

If it's still early game, you can rush the arts techs in the hope that the prestige gets you high enough. If it's mid to late game, you're not really going to be able to expand outside Ireland, unfortunately, because even the uncolonised land will have gone.

Since this is your first game, I would recommend you try one of the majors first, like France or Russia, or maybe Japan. They have an easier time of things. Ireland is going to be quite a tricky game, due to your relatively poor RGOs, lack of population, and proximity to the UK.

Thanks it is still early in my game so the arts techs might be worth a try. Though i might give a game as Japan a go as i like playing as the smaller nations.

Could someone please tell me under what keyword in a savegame file I can find my money account balance?
I want to edit my money account. I have too much money, 495 millions. And, as in real life, playing and living without money worries is quickly boring. Therefore, I would like to reduce my accumulated money, drastically. I just do not know how I could do it otherwise in the game. I have searched the file for the exact amount of money at the saved moment, but I could not find the amount of money/ the number in the file and with it the place to change it.

Oh there are alot of way's to spend these millions fast in game. Try manipulating world market with buying and selling goods on mass.

Or -100% tarifs full spending sliders and no taxes will get rid of that money too. And while you are at it takeout as much loan as you can the interest will eat your money.

I have a problem on Prussia. I'm playing Easy, so shouldn't things be easier? If I ever get into a war, the only nations who will EVER help me are my sphere nations. It doesn't matter if I'm fighting Austria, France, Belgium, Denmark, offensive or defensive, The UK, Ottomans, Russians, Dutch, Portuguese, they all refuse to fight with me. Why is this? It's really annoying knowing I have no allies.

do you have high infamy? that will keep countries from forming alliances with you.

also, form alliances before getting into wars. if you are at war, countries will probably not want to get dragged into it.
when you go to ask to form an alliance, the tooltip will tell you whether they will accept or not. hover over the ?icon in the dialogue box, and it will give you the reasons why they won't. that way you'll know whether you only need to improve relations, or let your infamy come down, or if you wasting your time.

also when you are a great power, you can only have one great power ally, until the great war discovery.

Is there any kind of console command to move a nations capital, my byzantine empire will have ugly borders unless I can shift the Ottoman capital (again)
Well, there's no command for that. However, there are several alternatives:
(1) write your own event
(2) use 'changeowner <YOURTAG> <capitalprovinceid>' followed by 'changeowner <TARGETTAG> <capitalprovinceid>'
(3) if you try to take Constantinople, just take the two regions bordering it - the capital will move to Ankara
(4) edit the cb_types.txt and remove the non-capital requirement

I'm a decent enough Vic 2 player and have a good grasp on pop demands, trade, etc.

However, I still rely on capitalists to build my industry up and decide what to build.

So I'm interested in playing a Communist state for once, but I don't know exactly how to build up my industry with planned economy, since capitalists can't build factories.

So basically, my question is: How do I know what factories to build and where? What should I look for? Since factories can buy materials off the world market to produce things still, is what my country produces itself really super important to what factories I build?

As with pretty much everything else in this game it depends on which country you're playing.
Having said that a cement factory is always the best place to start, specially if you have access to coal.
Also yeah, what you produce internally/in your sphere is super important because you get to buy it first (even before the #1 nation in the world if I'm not mistaken).
Playing Prussia/Germany? Build factories relient on coal and iron. Playing Russia? Build factories relient on Wood, and so on.

So, in general, I should aim to build factories that use what my nation/ its spheres produce. Cool, thanks for that tip!

So does it matter WHERE in my empire I build the factory? Should I generally aim for more populous/ more craftsmen pops/ better infrastructure or is there a bonus to building them in the state closest to where the raw goods are produced?

Also to expand on the concept of using your internally produced materials, you should build factories in chains (Lumbermill>Furniture, Glass > Liquor, etc) so you use what you produce and keep the flow.

During AHD I used to buld in the most populous states, however in HoD you get a % bonus to Throughput production if you produce the raw materials in the same State that the factory is located. I don't know how powerful this bonus is because I've barely played HoD, but it doesn't seem too appealing to me.

Well, it doesn't migitate too few workers. Basically, throughput bonus is two free levels of railroad (in detail there are differences, but that's it. Also HoD grants that bonus to manufactured goods produced in that state - a cloths factory get's a bonus, if the same state has a fabric factory (interestingly not depended on the level of that factory or it's state). In a Commie government, it can be worth to place bonus granting factories in that states, and close them immediately.

Hello everyone,

Never posted on this forum before (never bothered to register), but I have enjoyed a lot reading a bunch of the AAR (Avindian, Zorro, Brandenburg III and the crazy guy who did a krakow WC are my favorite so far).
I might have a few questions, many thanks in advance for any answers or help (FYI, I am playing HoD):

1) Is there any mod or tools that can gather statistics in the game to produce a graph over the 100 years period? What I am looking for is to have a graph (either in points or in ranking) with all the main powers over the 100 years. My favourite games are when I take a small country and try to make it a huge one (without the WC approach, I get too bored after 3 or 4h of troops micro-management on the battlefield) and it would be great to see the changes and progress. Something like the graph you use to have at the end of a Civ II game (or when you pressed "give up")

2) How to you speculate with trade? I have try to sell and buy with my government money to make more money (when you take Bavaria and you want to defeat Prussia, you usually need money on top of allies and money gives allies also :)). Is there any tip or tricks to do some nice government speculation? (what product, what approach etc...)

3) How do you force the capitalists to use the last two slots of factories? I thought it would automatically unlock when you have every possible factories tech (which is a long way into the game and I would have preferred to built all 8 and then destroy some) but it does not always work... did I miss something in the options?

4) What is the most efficient way to attack a country protected by a GP without having to go to war with that GP? I found three so far: wait for the GP to be at war somewhere else, be allied to the GP, be in the GP sphere (does not seems to always work), be the largest military force in the world (same)... any other tips (the last one being rather annoying to achieve)?

5) What should be a endgame population ratio in an industrial state? I was aiming at 40% craftsmen / 10% clerks and switching NF to obtain this balance but it might be totally stupid...

6) Edit: just red above, I do not understand the closed factory in the same state under a commie government... have not played a commie government enough probably. What does it do?

7) Edit again: is there also downloadable scenarios / savefiles to replay some specific moments like the AHD alternative start date allows you to? (especially WWI or just before)

Many thanks for all the answers and help.
