I didn't see a quick questions thread so I thought I'd start one.

Why do some of my captured provinces return to my enemy when I leave and some don't? Also, why do I sometimes capture the provinces instantly and others will take months? (I'm guessing it's because they're in a fort or something?)

Forts have garrisons and require sieges in order for the province to be yours.

As for your other question, I have to ask it, too. I'm assuming it's a glitch, although there might be a gameplay reason for it, too.

Basically provinces without cities or forts can be conquered instantly.
A unoccupied city province without a siege will automatically remove occupation from surrounding non-city provinces of the same nation if there are no hostile troops there. (ie either siege the cities or leave small units as supply guards in order to maintain your supply lines.

It's not a glitch. It's a gameplay feature that forces you to focus on the important provinces while still be able to maneuver through the other provinces.

The flipping back is for provinces that are adjacent to a fort (where both provinces are owned by the owner of the fort) - control will revert as soon as you leave the province (without putting ALL forts adjacent to the province under siege)

And provinces taking months to take over, that's forts indeed.

(thwarted by Birken again! throwing a game wasn't enough for him :( !)

Is there a way to view the specific traits that a leader has developed? So far, from what I can tell, they are only displayed as a quantity, and not as specific traits.

EDIT: Also, in the ledger there is a statistic applied to nations' militaries (both army and navy respectively), rating them by 'Quality'. What exactly does this entail? Does the game merely set a value based upon the ratio of elite verses cheaper units to a nation's military - such as, say, Russia having more militia in their army than Guards, thus giving them a lower quality rating. Or, is this an entirely independent statistic, like Discipline in EU3?

How do you stop France from being everywhere and making horrid borders?

I guess you have to... oh my God, that's terrible... play the game and fight with them?

Wait, so if you can't create new generals, then what happens when your leaders die? I thought I read somewhere that they never do die, but surely that can't be true!

Unfortunately, this is true. They can't die or be injured in battle.

Is the losing side of a huge battle supposed to earn way more idea points than the winner?
I just inflicted a hideous defeat on the Austrians with the OE... 45k dead to my 3500. They got 30 idea points and I got 6.

I guess they made more mistakes from which to learn from??

Yeah, the devs stated that explicitly. Helps to balance the game out a little I guess.
