Some units are not overall better than others, if you look at them, some have more points in fire and less in shock, for example.

While this is true in most cases, the simple mathematical fact is in most of the multiple unit scenarios there is a right and/or wrong choice. While sliders and such may change things so that a couple of close choices work, there are some units that are just flat out always the wrong choice.

Is their any relevance to wether the points are located in defense or offense? (for units, not on the slider) As I understood it every day of combat has both an offensive and defensive roll so it is the total that matters right?

Offence or defence does not really matter. Just look at the sum. What does matter until about 1600 is that the fire modifiers from the tech level are nearly negligible, so that the fire pips are worth much less than the shock and morale pips. In this respect, freeshooters are not significantly inferior to the other two types, at least at the time when they become available.

I would tend to disagree with your assertion that offense or defense doesn't matter. Unless the total is dramatically different you are better off with the better defenses unit due to the underlying math in the combat system. Someone did a pretty detailed analysis of it in the not too distant past.

tolls (im guessing you mean the tolls from the budget window when you hover the mouse over tax incomes) is from the CoTs you control

AFAIK building effects are multiplicative, so if lvl 1 is +25% and lvl2 is +25%, the net is not +50%, it is base * 25% + base * 25%. but tbh i never got around all the math

Do the native American tribes have any technology at all and are they able to improve under the AI?

I have released Heron for the hell of it, even gave them forts and workshops in all their provinces + they are catholic, but besides building a few archers they dont seem to do much of anything. (well they tried to attack a 2k peasant reble stack in my provinces with 4 k archers and were routed). We are fully allied with acces trade agreement and vassalisation.

would it not make sense for the AI to westernize and start aquiring some colonies? Or are the NA countries coded to never do that?

They will if they can but they need to be centralised, innovative and have a ruler with a good admin stat. Since that takes over 100 years' of slider movements I doubt the AI will have done this.

The AI can and has been observed westernising before. Try doing it yourself to see how tricky it is.

Trade agreements are silly in almost all situations; they seriously hamper your trade efficiency and there is no bonus to doing so other than not having your merchants fight with the other nation. With their terrible tradeing abilities the native Americans won't be able to compete with anyone anyway.

I thought the trade agreement would improve their chances of bringing in some merchants into my kentucky CoT as I have a monopoly there, but am the only one with merchants (took it over from the indian tribe there). As monopolys reduce the chances of other merchants, I thought that this might make it easier for em to occupy the free slots. If that is not the case I will just cancel the treaty again.

The fact that you are the only one with merchants there in a monopoly means you are sucking up all the money the CoT produces. It is not a bad thing.

Nah I made half of it according to the COTscreen, no idea what happened to the other half, but I thought id rake in some tolls. Problem solved itsself though. The province of the COT became common knowledge like 6 months after I asked this question and is now fukk of european merchants, still under my monopoly ofcourse.

I use them as a free almost-gift if I'm playing a mercintalistic country without a CoT.

In a new adventure with my imperialistic Britisch Empire i decided I wanted acces to the COT of Bruhir? Not sure if its the correct name, its the land around the ganges delta, into tibet. As they were allied with another country that I bribed to get into their CoT, I looked for a way to draw em into a war without angering my semi friendly nabour on sumatra. Declaring war on a minor india nation solved this problem, although it did drag in the largest indian nation and another nation I havent even met yet.

So far so good. My expeditionary force is only 10k strong with a subpar general, but Bruhir is throwing their forces at me piece by piece as the mindless savages they are (joking ofc, :p). The India minor and Bruhir are under Naval lockdown and the india major seems to be so busy fighting rebellions that their army count is marginal in this alliance. The entire alliance outnumbers me 5 to 1 but so far I am not too worried.

Now my question though: How do I demand Bruhir to open their CoT to me? I do not see the option in the demand tribute list. The game itsself says I can open a CoT by both warfare and diplomacy, but I can't find it. The war is nowhere far enough progressed for me to demand anything, (4%+) but I find it strange I don't even see the option.

Then another question do spices become more valuable over time? ceylon and sumatra all produce this and historicly it was highly sought after, but so far the prize is 3 or something.
