I really wish this game came with a better manual, or a more in-depth tutorial, because as a new player to the series I am pretty much completely lost.

I declared war on some dude, raised my levies and sent my 285 troops after his single county. I beat his army, but didn't have enough troops left to effectively lay a siege. So I took a look at my provinces and saw that my levy buttons are still greyed out. No matter how long I waited, those buttons stayed grey. I figured ok, maybe cause I already have an army out? Maybe I need to send my army back to its home province to get reinforced? So I sent my army back to the province assuming it'd refresh or something... nope. Had the army sitting there for at least a year and a half, and its still at 181 troops.

So... how do I get my army back up to 285? This is incredibly aggravating. Am I totally retarded? Am I missing something very obvious? You'd assume something like this would be more intuitive, since troops will die in pretty much every battle you send them to. Is there a button I need to press somewhere? Please help :(

Levies wont reinforce in the field, you have to stand it down and send them back to their province. You're best bet for an early war is to save up money so you can hire a mercenary band, their 1,500 men should quickly siege your target county.

Thanks for the replies, that's actually what I ended up doing. It just seems strange to have to disband an entire army just to replenish a few dead soldiers, but I guess that's how it is :)

If you have a vassel or another province under your control you can always send them too, otherwise think of it as your army has failed and you must go home to recoup your loses and perhaps try again, it's not like they can levy a large force after you beat them once. it takes a little while to get a full levy again.
