Hi everyone, quick question for the experts out there. Does one always research all spells which are available through normal gameplay in the end?

I got a surprise yesterday while playing. I was already done with my research. I had Unity and my spell research tree was completely empty when, to my surprise, I found Counterspell in a monster's lair in a portal world.

Up until that moment I hadn't missed it because the AI had not started casting Unity yet.

After I found the counterspell in that lair, 6 new research options appeared. All divine spells, not normal ones.

Anyone know if this might be a bug, or if this is designed that way?

(Note: Not an expert.)

My experience suggests that you are experiencing a bug. Unity is supposed to appear after all the arcane spells have been researched. Divine Spells can appear alongside Unity normally. So having Unity before Counterspell sounds like a bug.

As far as the counterspell acquisiton triggering new research options... Generally the game checks for new divine spells at the end of turn. Anything that changed divine favor can result in new research options (ie, temple built, divine quest completed/failed). The new spell thresholds are at reputations of 10, 25, 50, and 75(I think). Pretty sure about 10 and 25.

In your case, it could be that finding the Counterspell triggered one of those calculations outside the normal "end turn" calc. Had you done anything to affect your reputation with the God's recently? Sometimes the game doesn't update research options properly until a game reload or restart- finding the spell could have acted like a reload as well.

I had 40+ reputation with two gods, but I didn't actively started working on that reputation until after I was done with all my research. I think I was only once asked to build a temple before I was done with my research tree, and I rejected that quest. Some reputation points were gathered by completing "kill the infidels" quests.

When I found "counterspell" in the lair I got 6 spells while before it was empty, so yes, finding it might have reloaded my pane.

I also noticed "elemental resurrection" was listed double in the spell list after I found "counterspell" in that lair.

Ah. The multiples of a single spell in the research pane is a bug with no known diagnosis atm. There is a thread about it in the tech support forum. On the plus side, it doesn't seem to interfere with researching other spells- say you have 4 Elemental Res options, and build a temple that unlocks new divine spells. I've seen the panel change to 3 Ele Res, and two new divine spells.

In general, I save and load if I think I'm missing the option to research divine spells I've unlocked. It "jump starts" the research panel surprisingly often.

Edit to Add: Tech Support thread http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/showthread.php?612721-Same-Spell-Repeated-in-Research-Windows. Feel free to add to it if you have new info; hopefully it will help the devs squash the issue.
