Quick question about Steam preorder

I just pre-ordered Stellaris from Steam, it's now in my game library but greyed out. I've never pre-ordered anything before so I apologize if this sounds dumb but will I not be able to play the game until May 9th?

Another thing is typically about a week before the game comes (or whenever they decide to do it) out instead of the typical "play" button, there will be a button that says "pre-load" as well so you can play the game right at the starting time. (this is important if, like me, you have shitty download speed)

Yes, pre-loading is really nice option to have. Unfortunately in this particular case, PDS has decided against pre-loading:

Will the game have the option to pre-load it before release?
This is not an option we can offer due to issues with Grey Market and not approved retailers that are likely to scam customers.

I pre-ordered the Galaxy Edition on steam, and my paradox account seems to know I now own the game, yet I am unable to pick out Stellaris Avatars and I don't think I have the icon below my avatar yet for owning the game? Do I just need to wait longer, or is something weird going on?

Log out of the forums then back in. It can't hurt, and it helped me.

Are you sure you've synced your Owned Items? If so, then yeah, do what @GC13 suggested.
