I'm Ottomans and just annexed Brescia from Venice. The original plan was to sell it to my vassal Tirol (adjacent province Trent), but then I discovered it's part of the HRE and can't be sold to Tirol. I was then surprised to discover that I have the option to core Brescia, but my understanding is you actually need to be adjacent to the territory to be cored, or it has be on the coast and within your colonial range.

Brescia is landlocked and adjacent only to my vassal, which I'm pretty sure doesn't count - I have another game where I couldn't core a province that was only adjacent to my vassal. So is this WAD? *confused*

Nobody is able to answer to that?
I had a very similar situation: as Austria fighting a war against France, in PU with Burgundy and alliance with Spain, I signed a peace deal giving Rouergue to Spain. My hope was that Spain would then sell the province to Burgundy (because Burgundy had a claim on that province, and Spain did sell a province in a similar way in a previous peace deal), because Spain was not able to core Rouergue. Indeed Spain had no land connection to Rouergue, and of course no naval connection to this landlocked province. Not even a core or a claim in a neighbouring province to "bridge". BUT just the day after the peace deal I see a spanish guy working on Rouergue to make it a core !
Which rule would allow that? Does it mean you can core through an ally? Or is it because Spain used to own the nearby Auvergne? (they didn't core it, but I think that's the province I gave them in the previous peace deal, that they sold to Burgundy)

If I'm not wrong, you can core anything that is in your colonization range, and vassals, colonial nations and protectorates etc. extends your colonial range. Since Tirol is your vassal and a part of your sphere of influence you can core the province next to your sphere of influence.

You can core anything adjacent to your vassals so long as they're on the same continent as you. As you're the Ottomans, your capital is European, so Tirol is on the same continent. Therefore, you can core Brescia.

Well... turned out my situation was not so similar: I hadn't seen that he had Tyrol as a vassal. The fact that you can core through a vassal is something I knew, but I still don't understand how Spain has been able to core Rouergue in my game. Rouergue was only touching his ally (me) and his rival (France).

I would need to see a screenshot. Might just be a random case where the game isn't consistent, though.

Did Spain have any vassals who had a core next to Rouergue? If I'm not mistaken you can core a province adjacent to a cored province of your vassals even if they no longer own that province.

what people generally overlook is that vassals EXTEND your coring range, if any of the vassal provinces is within YOUR coring range.

Example. As foix i conquered bessarabia port in black sea for strategy purposes. Obviosuly i couldn't core it with my meager 160 coring range. then made byzantium a vassal. Problem was that nearest byzantian province was 164 coring range (d'oh!). I then had opportunity to grab a tripolitan province (again for strategy, one province gave me holy war cb on 3-4 countries, enabling me to go for jerusalem). Once i cored that, byzantium provinces came into coring range of my country.. Result? All of sudden byzantium extends my coring rnge, and i could core bessarabia as well. I used that trick to spread core with only diplo tech 3 constantly till 1800.

Here is my situation in image, as it can make things more clear for people who are not experts in French geography :)
eu4_17.png
Actually my situation was slightly different since I took the screenshot lately, after I had conquered low-lengadoc as well. But it's probably not really changing anything.

So you see me (Austria, white) and my vassal (Burgundy, purple) on one side, my ally (Spain, yellow) on the other side, and my rival (France, blue) in the middle. Rouergue is the yellow stain in the middle, which Spain managed to core although it didn't have any land access (not even through my alliance, except via my dutch ports !).

Little known game mechanic - you can also core through occupied land.

Colonies too.
Wait, so if I occupy Potiguara can I colonise Brazil immediately? Or use one occupied Mexican nation to core province captured from other one?

I mean this:

As Cherokee, conquer a nation with an uncolonized province between you. Full annex, drop a colony in that uncolonized province for 1 second, core, cancel colony. That way.
