1) Playing as Nepal (for ex.) I convert a lot of POPs into soldiers.
2) I create a decent army corps.
3) I then demobilize ALL of the soldier POPs, and now can't reinforce, and have a large negative manpower.

Now I go into combat. As I take losses, what happens? No people in my country are getting killed?

Alternatively, suppose you're playing a large country, like Russia. Soldier POPs all over the place. A certain unit has it's home provice: Moskva. You go to Moscow, and demobilize all the soldier POPs there. Now that unit goes into combat, and takes losses. Which POPs (if any) take the hit? Other 'Russians' elsewhere, or, what? Random soldiers? Nobody?

Step 3 is not allowed by the game mechanics. You can only demote soldier POPs of size equivalent to or less than the free manpower. As you have a standing corps your free manpower will always be less than your total number of soldier POPs.

IIRC it takes other Russians first, then other culture soldier POPs. I'm not sure though.

OK what IF I have about 30 Russian-cultured divisions, but I demobilize all my Russian soldier POPs? I can do this, because I have a plethora of Polish, Ukrainian, Romanian, etc. soldier POPs. I shouldn't be losing any Russians in the heartland, right? But will I lose soldier POPs elsewhere? I'm just trying to avoid losing any national-culture POPs. The only people I want to lose, are non-nationals, in crappy RGO places (1.5 grain, etc). But of course, I'd rather not disband the 30 Russki div's. So far it seems to be working.

Shame about the Nepal thing. I thought I was onto a potentially good idea there... ;)

I think that would work. The only downside I can see is that if you want to build more Russian divisions you'll have to turn 300k Russian POPs into soldiers again.

Well, on that note... I was just thinking I'd make the Russian heartland (and Belarus) the place where all the factories and efficient RGOs are working to support the economy, and then just have a massive army that is mostly made up of all the other cultures surrounding them. Nothing wrong with that, right? I mean, that's how ancient Rome fell... but otherwise, nothing wrong with it? They're regulars, and just as reliable. So, they won't have any complaints? They won't 'get wise' to my grand scheme? :D

I did this as Germany... creating several "Danmark Armeekorps", plus I took a lot of Sweden -- just for manpower. Of course you give all these divisions regulars brigades. It worked fine. Ironically, the ONLY unit that ever suddenly 'rebelled' against me... was my #1, best-of-the-best, elite Imperial Guards division, based out of Berlin.

So, you never know who you can trust. Those Danes & Swedes though... they fought like champs. Never complained one bit... even as they were senselessly rampaging through the African interior on behalf of the overlord Kaiser.
