A lot of people, myself included, have complained that once you have all traditions (which you inevitably will) the entire feature and resource generation of Unity is useless. There could be a lot of options to change that, but one that should be relatively quick and simple to add would be making it so that you can swap out ascension perks, at an astronomical unity cost. Doing it cheaply would be broken, and not all should be swappable (just the ones providing numeric bonuses and little else) but it would let you re-develop early game stuff into late game stuff, with enough cost that it's not like there isn't still an advantage to people who take the longer view from the outset.

A quick and dirty version of this change would be a terrible idea, and a good version would involve significant balance effort.

Why must it be one or the other? I think this would be a possible good change which they could do and they could do the significant balance effort whenever they had time.

Because without the balance effort it's a terrible idea.

Honestly, as long as they make it longer than getting new traditions (as a baseline) it can't be less balanced than the whole system is anyway. Like, it might or might not be great, but it wouldn't be a step backwards in balance anyway.

The boring-but-effective fix would probably be milestones that create ever-greater Empire Ethics Attraction. As your unitiy increases, your empire becomes ever more, well, unified towards its ideals.

Not nearly as fun as swapping out perks, but also not potentially broken either (largely because by the time it kicks in, you've more or less hit on your empire's final ethics) and keeping unhappy factions as smalls as possible is your largest internal concern by that time.

Disagree, the ascension's perks help to create individuality for your civilization, stocking up unity to stay changing the perks just to have the best numbers for each situation causes a uncessary homogenization of civilizations in late game and remove the importance of the long term planning and this wouldnt fix the problem of unity being a bad resource after you fill all traditions trees, once you pick the best perks for the late game you would still have little use for the stored unity.
A better solution is create a few repeteable traditions (like the repeteable techs) that give a very small bonus and have a cost that increases in a non-linear manner each time you repeat the tradition, this system work with techs in late game so will work for unity and traditions.

What about hiveminds?

Wait for the story pack DLC that give Hive Minds it's proper depth and uniqueness?

Seriously though, maybe... influence income? Not much (unless it's a flat amount, but I'm thinking an extra fraction of a point per month), but enough to speed up your colonizing and spreading.
