I somehow couldn't find the answer to this. If I haven't bought the Rome DLC yet (would get it from GMG, but no keys are left), can I have a retinue? I seems like the NPCs all have retinues, but the retinue tab is greyed out for me. I can't tell if their retinues actually ever get into battles.

Another minor question: Can former leaders still get beatified or become saints in CK2? I haven't seen it yet. My last King died as "the Apostle" so I thought that might happen.

thanks!

Ok, I see that I'll need the DLC to use retinues, and the NPCs aren't supposed to use them. Am I misunderstanding what the little armies on the map are? They're smaller in size and you can't see the number of troops in them.

The little armies are (usually) armies of people you're not at war with. Sometimes the AI also raises troops to fight rebels or something and forgets to disband them when the rebels are defeated. I think it's a bug.

Yeah, Sainthood was kinda' cool in CK, so it seemed odd to take it out. No big deal though.

I don't remember the little armies before. They're annoying since it's nice to know the size of the fielded armies of potential enemies. You have to mouse over them and sometimes add them up.

Yeah, the little armies are new. I think it was so you'd know with less processing who was hostile and who wasn't. Doesn't seem terribly consistent though. There is a mod that adds Beatification and expands the Catholic church some, but I'm not sure if it's updated. I expect Paradox will get around to it eventually, though.
