Hello! I am new to Victoria, and have been playing as Sweden. I have been doing well so far, having built up huge prestige (3rd after U.K. and U.S.A. due to their colonies. God bless culture research), and built a decent industry (6th/7th) and an alright military.

I have had the event that turns me into Scandanavia and gives me the danish lands. I choose yes for this, was this a good idea? As far as I can work out it is. It has helped double my navy (as well as helping to mordernise it with newer ships) and boost my army.

The military front is going well. I am allied to Austria and Sardinia-Piedmont. I own all of Sicily, some Northern German lands (mostly from Hanover), and part of the most northern state of Egypt (via conquest)

So my questions are:

1) I have a colony in the province one south of Rio de Oro (which is owned by France), so is it only possible for me to claim the colony by invading France in a colonial war, and risk losing Sicily?
2) I'm I capable of taking Finland from Russia (I only won the Prussian war due to Austrian help)? I have level 1 forts in the two border provinces if it helps
3) Are more colonies a good idea?
4) How should I go about expanding my military without tanking my economy (I have 12 troops in my mobilization pool, as well as 15 in the field)
5) Was forming Scandanvia a good idea?
6) My new conservitave party has interventism as an econmical policy, so I can't build factories. Should I encourage the communist party in order to build more (the capatilists are, ironically, building too many factories, and I can't populate them)?

Thank you for any help and sorry for any spelling mistakes!

Ps, it is 1858 (I think, I am on a different laptop so can't check).

1.) You can take it from them in a colonial war also you can buy it from them

2.) I'd say yes. Your best bet would have been to invade during the Crimean War.

3.) Yes, if you don't want them you can always trade them for tech

4.) Take Finland for the manpower :)

5.) Very good idea

6.) Your call I prefer to let the capitalists do all the work.

1) If you declare a colonial war on France, they can't invade Sicily as that is not a colony, but a state of your country. They can and will however invade Egypt as that is a colony. Fighting France will be rather taxing for Scandinavia as they should be quite a bit stronger than you and have more manpower. On the other hand, you should be able to sink their fleet rather easily if you have more modern ships and that might be enough for you to win a colonial war.

2) Taking Finland shouldn't be that hard. Either ally with Prussia, Austria, UK or Ottomans, so the Russians are diverted. Then make a beeline to St. Petersburg with your troops and take it. That should give you a reasonable war score so you can demand some Finnish provinces.

3) Yes. There is no downside to colonies in Victoria.

4) 27 divisions is already quite a bit for a country like Scandinavia. You should try to get colonial manpower so you don't deplete your valuable Scandinavian POPs too much. Also, quality is as important as quantity. If you have more powerful (artillery or other brigades) troops than your enemy, better generals, and are able to encircle his troops, you can win against a considerably larger force easily. Victoria's AI is pretty braindead in war.

5) Yes.

6) Just lower your rich taxes so your capitalists build factories for you. Unless a good portion of your country is communist, you should not get the communist party as that will increase militancy of your population a lot.

Thanks for the advice. Glad to know I'm doing well so far. I plan to go to war with Russia allied with Austria and the U.K. Can't be too careful!

My plan is to leave 30,000 troops to defend capital (not attachments), 30,000 cavalry to lead the charge, and 180,000 to push into St. Petersburg. Will charge into the one Russian border province, and defend it until the reserves are ready. Fingers crossed!

Ps, 100th post!

Place a couple of divisions in St. Petersburg then anchor your navy outside. The shore bombardment bonus you get will have the russians attacking at very low efficiency, they will wear themselves out trying to take back their capital.

! Shore bombardment? I had no idea that it was in Ricky, too! I'm a big lover of the 1938 SHBB 's in HoI2DD for the bombardment, but maybe you can tell me - do all craft with guns have a bombardment value? Is it consistant, consistant %, or variable with the craft?

The more modern the ship the higher the value is basically.
The shore bombardment bonus is applied as soon as you have a navy outside the province the battle is taking place in, so no need for a special order like in HoI.

Shore bobardment in RIcky ONLY happens when you have dreadnaughts parked offshore, no other ship classes can do it iirc. Interesting way to play Sweden/Scandinavia. Taking Finland is a great idea, as they are a state culture.

Yes they can. Every other ship with guns can do it. Just Dreadnaughts do it best.
