questions on downloadable game

Hi,

Never having gone for the whole digital download game purchase before, I'm a little wary about forking over dough for a digital product.

Is there any DRM included in the download? Is it an iso image?

Do I need to download a browser extension or custom client or something to download it, or is just a normal download? I do not want to install anything like Steam or other clients on my computer.

Do I need to be connected to the internet to play the game?

Do I need to "register" at some random game site to purchase the game?

Assuming you are talking about Gamersgate.

If there is a DRM on a Gamersgate product, it will say so on the product page, otherwise there is none. I don't know what an ISO image is.

It is just plain download, that you can repeat as many times as you like when logged into your Gamersgate account.

Do I need to be connected to the internet to play the game?

Only when you want to download it, obviously.

Do I need to "register" at some random game site to purchase the game?

The only place you have to register at is Gamersgate itself. For support you already have this board, where there is a Gamersgate support forum.

Most of the above details depend which download site you use; I can only really speak about Gamers' Gate, which is the one I use myself.

- There is no DRM; Paradox themselves don't believe in it, apart from anything else (and neither do I, FWIW)

- GG used to have a custom client, but no longer - you just download with your browser functions

- You do not need to be connected to anything but the PCs of any players you MP with in order to play the game

- You almost certainly need to register at the site you buy from; they need your details as much as you need theirs for legal and such like purposes

With GG, the download copies an install file to your hard drive. It is possible to copy that file to a CD-ROM as your backup - but by default it will run to install the game and then delete the install file. It is also possible to copy the whole game directory to a DVD or whatever as a backup. That should only be needed as a last resort, however, since you can re-download games you have purchased (from most or all download sites, not just GG) at any time.

Will Aod be available anyplace other then gamersgate? I am hoping that it would be at direct2drive.com or amazon.com since both sites have excellent customer service while gmaersgate has been far from ideal.

Sounds like a very good move to get rid of the GG client, I will be getting my game from Gamersgate and support the company with the least hassle/DRM.

Edit: Preordered it it right now, the only additional registration I had to do was to something called Clickandbuy, but that depends on payment method I guess. Will be hard not reading the manual now while still at work..

Have bought Anno 1701 at GG and got problems with it, very fast and friendly customer service. They have refunded quickly great service!

My experience with GG has been very positive. I only had problems with Rome Gold last summer (and I've bought several games from them), and they did their best to solve it... and so it was finally.
