Hey guys,

I am still looking for up-to-date infos concerning the Moddir-function of HoI2/DD.

I read through some posts here and found some information that every file, which should be used inside the mod-dir must exist as file in the original filestructure of HoI2/DD (which means you have to create dummies for new files)

Is this information still up-to-date or was it fixed with a patch?

If not all new files need dummies, please tell me which not.


And, finally, was the multiplayer-problem in connection with Moddir fixed with a patch?

So far as I know, you still need a matching file in the vanilla install for the game to recognise such a file in the mod-dir.

I haven't tested mod-dir in MP since 1.2 ARMA patch came out, but as there was no mention of such in the change log, then I doubt it, myself.

I was using mod-dir for a long time. The exact requirements regarding dummy files and such changed between the various versions of the game. The later versions were far inferior, which as far as I can tell were due to tinkering by paradox (what this entailed I have no idea).

In early versions, particularly with CSV files and such if there was no modded copy then the base vanilla file was sufficient. In later versions you still had to copy the vanilla file into the mod folder- in effect making the mod-dir function pointless in some ways- certainly from the aspect of the size of the download.

Bottom line is- mod-dir is ok but functionality is variable.

Thanks to CSABadass's advice I have now switched over to JSGME- heed his advice. I would recommend the utility 110%. It is safe, quick and significantly easier than mod-dir- in regard to downloading a mod and getting it running. 3rd party concerns are immaterial- for any serious mod there isnt really any decent reason not to use it.

I think we will stick with a seperate copy then, since I have no hope that there will be a patch fixing it in the future...

- I had to copy all leaders, ministers and techteams since the game was loading them only from mod-dir, not base-dir.
- I had to place ai files in base-dir since the game was loading them only from base-dir, not mod-dir.
- Other files that I have modded or not (from db, db/events, config and scenarios dirs) worked as they should being read from mod-dir if present or base-dir if not (or I haven't noticed they weren't). Please not that scenarios only in mod-dir showed up.

Indeed. This is exactly what I was refering to. In earlier builds all this was not necessary- imagine my surprise when half of my mod suddenly didnt work!

Mod-dir as it stands now, basically removes utility and is getting close to pointless.

Not to forget the graphics - by and large those still need dummies too (techs, tech teams - will load in the research screen, but not in the spy screen otherwise, models certainly, not sure about leaders but taking nothing for granted).

It's not completely useless, but it is quite a pain in having to support it. There was a fix regarding the graphics issue for Doomsday, so that tech team graphics would load correctly in the research screen without dummies (unfortunately, they still need dummies for them to load in the spying screen, so in the end it solved little). But, hope springs eternal. If nobody is using moddir then it certainly won't be fixed IMHO. This way we at least know its uses and limitations, and with our contacts within Paradox might be able to get this on the agenda someday.

Your philosophy is right, but CORE is different to 1914. (Core does at least use the same timespan and therefore countries. 1914 has different countries too, but I'll see what I can do)

- Do Minister-/Leaderpics must have a dummy?
- Does Moddir deactivates the vanilla event-files, does it just overwrites events with the same ID, or does it just overwrite complete files?

Not completely sure about the leader/ministers actually - I was planning to test this once the Alpha for 0.40 gets going. As to the event files, we have our own scenario file, with references to only COREd event files if I'm not mistaken. Any leftover Vanilla events have their own COREd version in the moddir. I do know we have to insert new files as placeholders in the Vanilla structure. But as I'm more into the graphics rather than anything else it's probably best to ask Historyman about it - I'm sure he can enlighten you.

What I wanted to know: Do I have to face vanilla-events triggering in my mod, if I don't have mod-dummies for each vanilla-event file (or an event with the same ID)?


Do I have to reference the Mod-Directory when Including new event-files?

I made a testrun with HoI2 1.3a and everything worked fine without any dummies! Maybe Paradox already fixed the problem, I'll make testruns with DD/ARM soon.

Can anybody else confirm this?

Moddir works great with plain ol' HoI2. Always did. The troubles didn't start until DD/Armageddon. That's when I switched to JSGME.

I don't think so... We do have our own Ids as a rule, but are reusing Vanilla Ids for COREd Vanilla events. Those are the only ones actually firing.

Thank you very much Hagar. I already had a look into your files yesterday night :)
But if Moddir is that broken in DD/ARM, we cannot work with it, even if I was fascinated how it works in HoI2.

I think of letting our HoI2-version be moddir-compatible and our DD/AMR-Players have to make a seperate install.
