I thought each empire only gets one, one of the big perks of federations is that they can have different FTL techs in their unified fleet.

There is a later jump drive tech which is basically the best of all worlds but it eventually causes some kind of ~big sci-fi galactic problems~

I thought they also said somewhere that you couldn't group ships with different kinds of FTL. That would seem to negate the federation advantage, and compel them to pick one for the unified fleet.

I think you can still use different kinds of FTL, just in separate fleets, like I have this one Warp or Hyperlane fleet to create a stable front between myself and the enemy, and a Wormhole fleet to strike their homeworld at the same time.

Oh, sure. I think it would usually be preferable to have just one in the federated fleet, though. You can always use the fleets of the individual member nations for that sort of thing.

Well, we'll see when the game will be released, we don't have that much info on Federations for now, but it's true that multiple FTLs could be a little confusing

Can we get a general answer to what balances the above tech build with other builds that are more about happiness or resources?

Judging from the Blorg stream, it seems like the tech build would be far more risky than in most 4x games, simply because there are far more empires in the galaxy. The Blorg encountered serious competition for space and resources as early as 15 years into the game meaning that an early focus on science rather than mineral extraction and expansion could prove ruinous as you'd be surrounded by stronger empires long before you have the chance to get an overwhelming tech advantage. Compare this to say Civ 5 where you can easily play for a hundred turns or more with little competition from other empires, especially if you are building 'tall' as most tech-focused builds often do. In Stellaris, it seems that you will encounter opposition early enough that you can't simply massacre cavalry with tanks when someone finally tries to stop you.

If it's possible to infiltrate such a primitive civ, they dont have a centralised leadership...

Kickstart the bronze age and go Cyrus the great on the planet with a bit of aid ;)
Make sure your conquered folks (with infiltrated leaders) learn maths, do observatories and calculate the size of the planet, accurate calenders etc... shouldnt be more than 40 years until the planet is unified and civilized enough to start accepting semi-trained underling roles under their starfriends whom their conqueror rulers submitted to.
The next generation kids will already be going to imperial schools since hatching and know no other life than the space-life.

Good example ArchmageIlmryn! Stellaris does seem to be a lot less turtle-friendly than a game like Civ 5. With that being said though Civ 5 had a number of poorly implemented mechanics that encouraged certain playstyles which likely wouldn't be suitable for other 4X games or similar strategy games in general.

Another thing that makes Stellaris stand out in situations like ArchmageIlmryn's example are the more in-depth diplomacy options. With Diplomacy Stellaris shared more in common with Paradox's other Grand Strategy titles rather than a typical 4X where diplomacy options tends to be rather diminished. With Stellaris just because you have stronger empires around you doesn't necessarily mean you're going to be threatened by them. Clever diplomatic play could allow a smaller empire to thrive even with larger neighbors.
