I was wondering if it would be possible to produce several variants of a single vehicle in parallel. For example, what if I wanted to create a slow, well armoured Panzer IV for infantry support and a faster, better armed one for tank divisions without having to research any new major models?

I think the same question (or a similar one) was already asked once. If I remember right @podcat said that it would be possible.

i believe sense we can name them something different each like panther a or panther d he said we could produce them separately i need to look for the post i guess.

The variant system allows you to create, well, variants of your tanks/planes/ships with land/air/naval experience. You can improve them in 4 Categories by default, which vary depending on the type of equipment you are looking at. Carriers for example have armor, reliability, deckspace and engine, while submarines have stealth, engine and torpedoes as their available categories. Tanks have armor, reliability, engine and armament. It should also be noted that those are modable and that they are capped at 5 upgrades per category. That means you can only apply 5 points in armor, deckspace, reliability and engine for an carrier each, for example.

Here you go.

And how would you want to tell game to give fast variant to panzerdivision, and slow variant to infanterie division? Both are medium tanks and both will be used to reinforce medium tank battalions, i'm afraid.
Maybe give your infantry sturmgeschutzs battalion (so known "tank destroyers") instead?

EDIT: It looks i was wrong, sorry.

We can choose which equipment should be used by a template.
templates can be set up with lists of what equipment they are allowed, so what you asked can be done by duplicating/making separate templates. Not sure we have actually shown this? If we ahvent I'll make sure to add it to the DD list.

its useful if you dont want garrisons to use more modern weapons even if they are available in your stockpile. or for RP reasons ;)
