Okay, so i was responding to a thread a second ago, and another poster started talking about some of my questions of the Coptic religion. As (I hope) many of you know, Kingdoms like Nubia and Abyssinia are playable. Now, Paradox can easily avoid adding extra flavor to Muslims and they are not playable, but historiclly Coptic Kingdoms can be played, so they don't have an excuse not to. I have a three questions regarding their religion:

Will they just be considered Orthodox?
If not, if there some equivalent to the Pope and Patriarch?
Is there special events, features and etc specificly for them?

If any of you are willing to share your questions on the subject, post them.

There's a screenshot which shows an Ethiopian Prince of Abyssinia who is listed as a "Monophysite" Orthodox Christian. I don't think we know anything on the subject of Oriental Orthodox Christians other than that.

SecretMaster can probably tell us more. He accidentally made England Monophysites.

He brought an Abyssinian chick to court as part of an alliance against Egypt, then made her his heir's tutor. An event converted the heir from Catholicism. The Pope didn't mind because the game treats Monophysites as Orthodox heretics, and the Pope leaves all Orthodox Christians alone, even if they're heretics converting a major Catholic Kingdom away from Rome.

Check out SecretMaster's posts, and the Religion Dev Diary and that should give you some idea of what exactly is possible. A Pope in Alexandria would actually be possible, I just don't know what he'd do. Except sit around and hope Prester John/Abysinnia can kill Fatimids.

im really starting to get worried about these silly events that morph entire kingdoms into ahistorical abominations.

It's not kingdoms that change. Kingdoms don't have religions as far as I know. It's characters who have religions and it's them who do the changing. I mean, using an example outside of the game's scope, Henry VIII famously converted to protestantism and dragged the country with him by the hair. There's a lot of precedent really for sovereigns being the sole master of religion. Going to a little bit before the game's scope, look at Vladimir of Kiev and his legendary story of converting to Orthodoxy. Again, it's another example of the lord converting and then dragging the country with him by the hair.

I don't mind the religion events. They're out-of-period, but the House of Stewart's frequent flirtations with Catholicism in the 17th century indicate the risks of allowing your kids to be taught by members of other religions. This particular example is extreme not because the event is implausible, but because the human player chose an implausible Monophysite Queen, and then chose to make her tutor without bothering to make her Catholic.

The cultural ones, tho. I am definitely commenting those out before I load the game.

Jia Xu, I welcome countries changing religion, but scenarios such as Oriental Orthodox england with converted province religion, that just makes me cringe

Isn't this why there's a beta before release?

Yeah pretty much.

As for culture changes, here's my beef: it's fine if a character wants to change religion. It's a whole other story if you're trying to drag a country by the hair from Catholicism to Oriental Orthodox (Coptic). For one, it would be hugely diversive and if you were to try it, the act should spawn a massive civil war/revolt events for years. It's not simple to change your own religions under any circumstances. i have personal experience with it. And while I agree that a tutor or parent might influence a child to change religion, for that child to then force everyone else to come along with them is something entirely different, even if they were king.

At any rate, it's not a simple thing and from what I've heard so far about it the game is treating it much too simply. So hopefully the devs are copping onto it and are tweaking it before release.
