Questions about Expansion CB and Religion Idea Group

1) I have the expansion idea group filled out but I don't see the expansion CB on DoW screen against less advanced Asian countries. I'm playing as Ming. How do they determine "less advanced"? My Mil and Adm levels are at and above the levels of the leading Western powers, but my Dip level is still 3. Is it because my Dip level is low? Edit: Nevermind, I figured it out. It's because I haven't Westernized yet. That's a pretty odd way to flag as "more advanced" when my tech levels in Adm and Mil are so much higher than all of theirs.

2) For the religion idea group, does "Devoutness - +1 Tolerance of the true faith" increase my tolerance for Confucianism? I thought it was Catholicism because the idea has a cross for its icon. If I want to completely avoid the random events that change my provinces into non-Confucian religions, should "Religious Tradition" be the final idea I get for that group? Basically, do I just NEVER take "Ecumenism"? Missing out on +100% Better Relations Over Time seems like a high price to pay in order to maintain my religious unity.

1) AFAIK less advanced nations means nations in a different tech group than yourself. In other words, you need to westernize before you can use it.

2) Tolerance of the true faith count for all religions, also the confucian. You can probably take ecumenism as long as you don't take any other decision that gives more tolerance of heathens. Not 100% sure though.

@1. I'm pretty sure you need to be in western/ottoman tech group to get the CB.
@2. It gives +1 tolerance to YOUR true faith whatever it is - so if your state religion is Confucianism - that's what's getting the boost. The icon is just.. an icon.

1) You have to be in the Western, Eastern or Ottoman tech Group and then it will apply to all countries in the Nomad, Indian and Chinese tech group. Nothing to do with tech level or even location, like the tooltip would have you believe.

2) You're right, as a Buddhist you will have too much tolerance of heretics with Ecumenism, even if you denounced Neo-Confucianism. But you can generally handle the random conversions, so I would personally take it anyway. If you find yourself swamped in converting provinces you can always let the rebels win and become a slightly better religion ^^

Can anyone confirm if Ecumenism is safe to take?

In a different game, I tried letting the Buddhist rebels win so that I could switch my state religion to Buddhism, and then the random events for religious conversion started switching my provinces from Buddhism to Confucianism..... it just automatically goes against the grain of whatever your state religion is at any given time, so switching state religion doesn't help.

Well, that's because Buddhism and Confucianism both have +3 tolerance of heretics, I was aiming more for Hindu or Shinto, or even Sunni

I think you want tolerance for heretics to be below 2.0 (not sure how rounding works!), maybe you can get it low enough anyway with decisions? With tolerance at 2 or higher, the random flip events will occur.
