Questions about crusades

Okay so in my game the pope has just launched a crusade for Jerusalem. Do I need to declare war on its owner to take part or do I just show up?
How is the crusade ended do you have to control the land for a period of random time or what? Thanks for any info

Pull up the pope's diplomacy screen, offer to join his war. Then go take all the land, once warscore hits 100% victory should be declared soonish (assuming the Fatimids aren't dealing with a rebelling vassal. IIRC you can't peace out if the vassal has captured any of the leige's territory.) Try to get the highest contribution to get the land - this is best done by fighting battles (and preferably winning).

You get a big crusade flag that "hangs" behind your character portrait when a crusade is declared. Click it and you will be able to press the + button for the pope to join his war.

ALTERNATIVELY, if that doesn't make sense to you, just find the Pope in Rome, engage diplomacy with him and Offer To Join War.
