Just started playing, and a few things have me a bit confused. Namely, regarding armies. I get how I can spend some gold to build a new unit, but do I have any options once I don't have any need of that unit? I can't just leave them around sucking up mainetance (too poor), but disbanding them seems to just completely obliterate the unit.

Is there anyway to turn them into a non-standing force that I can call up later? Or do I just have to save up my gold and anticipate that I'm about to get attacked and starting rebuilding units then?

In Rome it costs to disband your units so it's better (and probably cheaper) to let them stand rather than disband. As long as you're not going very much over the force limit you should be fine with the maintenance costs, however a couple of units over the limit will multiply your costs.

When not in war or other emergency you can set your maintenance to lower in case it's eating up all of your income but that drops armies' morale so if they end up in a fight with low maintenance they'll easily rout and then you'll have to rise the maintenance again to have a success in the battles.

On the military screen, you can lower the maintenance sliders so that armies will cost as little as half to maintain, but will have significantly reduced morale. I like to think that the men are being temporarily disbanded as they return home to tend to their crops, and can be called upon when war breaks out (and the slider is raised to normal). Just don't forget to raise the slider again or you will probably lose any battle you fight :)
