Are you so sure about armour being important? Once Inf1918 is upgraded to Inf1936 things might change a bit.
I recently watched about a dozen SCWs trying to tweak the AI and the likelihood of interventions, and the side with more armor always won (IIRC). Might have been a coincidence, though.

Your point about reinforcements of gifted divisions is probably right, I haven't thought of that (and never tried to influence the war that way, it was just a quick idea). ESE and upgrades are definitely a huge factor for a human Spain, but how much do they matter to the AI? It less short on IC in general (with all the stuff it gets for free).

Since AI is poor at handling low ESE it is actually more important for AI. And when it comes to IC the issue is the same. The human player can reduce research spendings if he wants to.

Personally, I'd follow it even with more conservative goals because I long wanted to take a look at CORE anyway, but miss a good walkthrough/tutorial to learn the basics (I know there is one, but more can't hurt - and Japan is kinda special anyway).
Well as the first two hours the tech trees will probably overwhelm any new player, it's best to give it a spin or two. :D

I was always under the impression that the AI doesn't even *have* research spending. Freebies like that may be necessary because it's hard to teach the AI how to manage spending properly, but they make observations about available IC as a human player kinda moot for predicting AI behavior. If you can observe poor ESE even in a handsoff game (with nofog and fullcontrol), that would prove your point. Didn't check for that though.
