I usually surround the Pripet Marshes, but it takes a very long time to reduce that pocket, so I leave behind about 3 infantry in each provinces around it, with a supporting army in case the Soviets try to breakout, and reduce their org with bombing missions and just keep going, leaving my small infantry forces to advance into the Marshes to reduce the pocket and finally destroy it, but it usually takes the better part of a year, but I just don't have the time to destroy it outright or advance through it with my motorized and armour forces.

I'm curious what people do about the three swamp provinces in the center of the Soviet line when launching Barborssa. Do you attack into them or attempt to surround all or part of them?

I've just now dealt w/ this issue, and successfully for the first time ever. Take a look at my thread, where I was asking for similar advice as you.

Analyze This! (please)

To get org and strength down inside an encircled province(s) reload the game after you've created the pocket. Sometimes the game won't recognize that supplies shouldn't get there unless you do this.

I had that happen to me once, surrounded a bunch of German and Italian Divisions in the Austrian Alps, spent almost two years trying to reduce them (they were mountain provinces, and I didn't have that many mountain divisions), eventually had to use around 70 divisions, attacking from different provinces, with 3 airfleets supporting them, to take just one province. Wish I had known about that problem back then.

With regards to Barbarossa, after playing many times I realized that it is important to take Denmark before launching Barbarossa. The reason is that if you don't, the Russians can supply Leningrad through Öresund (strait between Copenhagen and Malmö) even if you cut off the land connection. AFAIK a save & reload won't cancel convoys through "blocked" straits. Just something to keep in mind if you want to avoid a costly assault against an urban fortress.

O yea, don't forget to save and reload to make sure the armies are out of supply

This bug is really kind of bizzare when you think of it along with the supply bug re: nukes, when supply is reinstated in a province after reloading.

You can also put the bulk of your navy in the sealanes and grind down the Soviet naval convoys if you do not want to do this. Denmark isn't much of a challenge, but I like to wait till the "free" DOW event against them fires and you end up getting them as a puppet (this is actually helpful to Germany in terms of resource flow). Sometimes that event occurs after Barb. starts (1.06/CORE 83)
It also can help somewhat to bang away at their convoy capacity as I often see them supplying their forces in the Caucasus across the Caspian Sea if I have otherwise cut them off. It can be a major pain clearing out those mountain provinces if they are doing that

Yes, very true, but your navy will take a beating from unescorted convoys. You also risk a visit from the Soviet Baltic fleet which is quite formidable. Of course, if you have naval bombers... ;)

I never knew the importance of taking Denmark before reading this thread.

As Germany I've always avoided taking Denmark because more often than not I've had insufficient troop strength to do it while waging war against the West. I now will have to rethink by army buildup strategy before Sept. 1 1939.
