Silent Service

My first was Silent Service - a sub game by MicroProse for the Amiga (1987). I think it was a Sid Meier title. Loved sinking the carrier!

I also played panzer general, quite a blast.

One of my other favorites is the Strategic Command series (1 and 2). You can play all of WW2 in an evening.

B17 on the Intellivision system
Hunt for Red October on the C128
Panzer General on the PC

BTW... HOI reminds me alot of the Wargame "World War 2" from SSI (IIRC). It came out a few years after Third Reich and was much better in all degrees.

Favorite War Game

I think that I would love to have WIE on a PC WITH an AI capable of putting up a good fight. The game mechanics are so simple and easy to understand, yet providing good realism. Grand strategy at its best.

I actually own the computerized version, but without an AI. If AI was added I would buy it and play it today!

I've spent hundreds of hours with various installments of Steel Panthers and Panzer General on Amiga and PC... but the first I ever played was probably the old (1991? 1992?) Arnhem hex-based strategy. Has any of you even heard of it?

Love it. Still got it in my collection :D

Although I don't play it anymore.
It is very old in terms of computer games now lol

Reminds me of some of the movies I loved to watch as a kid like the Six million dollar man. I had very fond memories of it but when I got to watch an episode of it a few years ago I was like....OMG did I really like this crap

Maybe you guys can help me out. I once played a game when I was VERY young (12ish) where is was a more or less top down view...individual troops were used, but so were tanks, there was good attention to detail on terrain, it was on a smaller scale. The troops moved at pretty realistic looking speeds. If I had to guess, I would say it was from around 1993-94...this ringing any bells? I've been looking for it forever....

There are several games to which this could apply, I can think of Steel Panthers or Panzer General.

Adding to my earlier post, wouldn't it be great one day HOI, instead of solving the battles automatically at divisional level instead opened up another game on a larger scale but using company/brigade scale maps of the local region where the battle is taking place so we can play out the battle similar to Empire total war.

I am wondering how far the Total war series is going to take us actually. Will we see a WWII Total War do you think?

Or even a modern day Gulf War from the series?

I dream about this - my dream, my wife's nightmare!

Then, when you're in the brigade scale map, you can open up ANOTHER level and play a squad-based shooter, like Company of Heroes, or a FPS like Call of Duty. I'd never leave my house again!
