What was your first WWII Strategy Game on the PC Platform? What was your favorite (HOIs Excluded, unless that was your first)?

I am sure this thread has been done before but so what?!

Mine was Storm Across Europe: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Storm_Across_Europe

and my Fave was: Panzer General
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panzer_General

Dito except that HoI 2 DD is my today favourite and HoI 3 might become the successor when successfully patched.

Both games you named are still available on the net as DLs. PG even as a WIN95 version. I won't give any links as it might violate forum rules. I can only tell that these games share a life of being underdogs today. ;)

I was going to say Panzer General, but I played Task Force 1942 even before then.

I remember both rather vividly - like how you tried to eek out every last experience star for your Stukas on the Poland level (and how beating up on the sad Polish air force was vital experience for your fighters as well)...

Hard to really compare them. I really loved HOI so much...! I don't think I've ever been addicted to a game like that. Though at this point HOI 1 and 2 blur together a little in my mind. HOI1/2 are in their own genre to me.... much more fun than anything else I can think of that comes vaguely close.

Well, I think there's a fair bunch of us who go back to the 60's and 70's with tabletop wargames like Third Reich, Afrika Korps, D-Day, etc. In 1975 it would have been an absolute fantasy to think of HOI1 let alone HOI3. So this stuff is all gravy. :)

The first was called something like "The Big Three", but I'm not sure because I can't find any references to it now (it was a Windows 3.1 game). It was a hex game showing the European theatre, with armies, industry and fleets represented by a single icon each. Countries accumulated points every turn (which was 1 month I think) based on how much industry they had, which they got to spend on new fleets and armies. It was pretty similar to a simplified HoI, actually.

My favourite is Close Combat 3

Panzer General 2. Never played PG1. I also played Steel Panthers at that time.

BTW, is there a revival of PG or something? A recent game by Matrix Games is a remake of PG (good games deserve to be remaked, like good old movies).

Velikye Luki and TF42 .
Actually if one includes Apple 2 platform then I played War in the East (excellent) somewhere around 1990 .

My favourite is Panzer Campaigns (pity the AI is so subpar)

Ah yes, the old Avalon Hill and SPI games...

Favorites and firsts of mine come from those..

First WWII game was Third Reich

Favorite was War in Europe when they re-did that one (the 9 maps were great - loved just setting up the game with all of the different counters on it). Played a moderated game of War in the Pacific that was about as much fun as I've ever had...

Wanted to see the whole 'Europa' series by GDW come together like they were planning - that would have been insane. As it was, Fire in the East and Scorched Earth were a blast.

Early '80s for Apple ][+: Guadalcanal Campaign and its successor War in the South Pacific (both Gary Grigsby designs from SSI; some of the SSG games later were good, too).

Thanks for the thread - nice to take a walk down memory lane...
