Hi All. Not being too involved in the CORE mod, I was wondering if there was a target date for the 0.2 release that is being referred to?

Obviously something generalistic in nature...

It was not meant to be harsh (it is in fact, yes, but I have a deep respect for you guys when I remember how much fun I had playing HOI 1 CORE with friends a few years ago), but be realistic: just look at Stony Road or the 1933 Mod (a french one, yes). This one covers 20 years (1933-1953). It has a countless number of events, is balanced, fun to play, completed (and only improving by now), and this for a long time.

You guys are maybe tired of modding, or maybe that your family, work, etc... are leaving you only few moments free that disallow you to make a real tough mod?

For me CORE2 is just an empty shell, and I don't have any real hope of seeing a real release before a long time.
Sorry if I "hurt" you, and I hope you'll prove me wrong.

A disappointed yet hoping fan.

Not at all, I appreciate the input when it has some substance. It is probably true that CORE members have had more to do on the side - all the Development members up until we expanded this winter are Betas, except me, which means continous work with HoI2 patches and Doomsday, and some of us have family, perhaps more so than other modders (this is just a supposition, with no real facts to base it on). With this in mind it may be true that CORE is moving slower than other mods, but I also believe we have made some very time-consuming changes that far outstretch what other mods have accomplished, but it is of course up to every individual to judge if our changes are for the better or not and that a "real release" is sometime off, but once we have real AI in there it should certainly be comparable to a vanilla game, if not other mods. Time will tell, of course, but I can say that the mod isn't dying.

I really don't know if the mod is dying, but i played all the "major" mods for HoI2 and now I am playing HoI2 original. Why? Because it is funny, more fun then the other mods, that they are incomplete (every mod), with changes not so useful, thay have nothing really new.

The Total Realism Mod has that graphics that I really hate because i cannot understand in real time if I have planes or infantry or tanks

The Stony Road has some new event and after that?

Core2 is long to be considered completed.....(but i think it has the best ideas)

this is what i think....

No matter what you do with this one, it's still 'hats off' for the perfect job done with the first C.O.R.E.
I hope you can do the same with this one and I'm so ready to wait.
So, take your time

Currently the guys are working on a major revamp of the AI and further extention of the tech tree for starters. Thus a small patch wasn't really an option. Besides, the most pressing issue is the AI anyway. All the open issues ATM are small in general, and the majority of them need migrating to 1.3b files AFAIK...

Based on the lack of activity in this forum the mod kind of seems dead, but that's mostly due to the fact we use our own forum at www.21vikings.dk ... So should you be interested You can always check out that one. It would keep you more up-to-date with developments and future plans. As it is we're very much alive (if I may be so free to include myself to the 'group', even though I'm just a 'simple' CORE beta-tester :) ). Same goes for VIP, as 0.5 is in the works ATM.

Myself and the Aussie group who mainly played CORE in HOI, loved it. We were basialy apart of development with bug testing in a Multplayer for CORE.

The orginal CORE though was developed in smaller increments with modest tech changes comming along after a few releases. It was the early releases with the many new event chains that caught the eye of most HOI players. In my point of of view it is historic events and the choices these events present that added flavor to the basic hoi.

With each new version of CORE that came out you couldnt wait to see the new events added to the game along with other changes of course.

With CORE 2 it seems to me that perhaps to much is trying to be done all at once. There dosnt seem to be the momentum of the orginal CORE. Look back to what worked, more relesases, with more events and smaller features, with the larger more complicated features being such as the tech tree being added over time. This would make more sense as it is alot more time consuming.

most of our aussie group will be migrating to doomsday over the next few weeks. Mainly due to the new features its adds to the 36 scenario which is what we always play. So unless CORE2 adapts to doomsday i wont get a chance to play it.

Prehaps it may be time to stick to basics, leave the tech tree for now and incorporat CORE2 into Doomsday with all the events yous have developed and balancing issues and graphics, with new tweaks here and there. Get a basic relase out for Doomsday and have regualry smaller updates. This would generate the momentum that the oringal CORE had.

I am one of COREs biggest fans, but when an expansion such as doomsday comes out and the CORE mod is still not to 0.2 release yet after more then 1 year of hoi 2 being out. It seems as thugh we will never see a CORE 2 as your sights are set to high, maybe.

Small steps are best.

CORE is going to swich to DD, can't say in wich version tough.

About the big steps, I like it that way. It gives a more complete and balanced product. Also, most bugs will be filtered out before realese, so people can just play without getting anoyed by the bugs.

Ok, I'll try and make another stab at explaining why the mod is developing as it is.

First of all the team as a whole learned some very valuable lessons during the time we developed CORE1. while it is a lot easier to add events in the starting process it actually makes later development much much slower. Here's what we could have done:

1. look at the new command/trigger posibilities of HoI2 and rewrite and port over the events from CORE1 using the HoI2 vanilla/doomsday techtrees and unit models as a base.

2. modify the ai to suit the possible implications that the new events might have. Looking through the loads of events that could have an impact and most likely missing many of them, meaning you would have to do it again and again.

3. add new basic ideas like peacetime OOB.

4. add new techtrees/units for the different branches and check every single of those thousands of events for any relations to vanilla techs or units with huge potential of missing some causing lots of trouble in error finding. Modify OOB's and ideas implemented in 3 as well as making sure all ai's are updated with the lates tech infor and buildpreferences.

5. add changes to the map/IC etc. and then once again go through all the events looking for connections to changes made with huge potential of making errors or missing some. Again the ai has to be made aware of any new situations like moved VP etc.

6. Now rebalance the mess please :p

As you can all see that would cause massive amounts of double work so the team agreed a long time ago to take a different approach that may delay the initial release but will greatly improve the quality and release speed once the basics are set.

This is the plan as it stands atm.

1. Modify all tech trees(almost done)

2. Implement peacetime OOB's(Should be completed in 2-3 weeks.)

3. add basic 1.3b ai's modified for added countries(almost done)

4. IC/Resource changes(most likely another release or two away)

5. While some events are included along the way most of the events will be added from this point on.

6. Modify the ai to take all CORE changes into account. A process that will beginn soon but not be finished for a long time.

Hope this makes sense to you all.

And yes JRShield is right after 0.2 + a fix patch(most likely) we will make a decission as to when exactly the change to match future release to Doomsday exclusively will happen.

So... For the crucial items, we are looking at 2-3 weeks for #1, #2, #3. Thus 3 weeks plus a week or so to put it all together, (plus a week to stop playing Doomsday :D ) :

Therefore: approx beginning-may for a 0.2 release? Jun/Jul ish for a Doomsday version?

The beta-release of 0.2 is pending, that's for sure. I really don't know how long beta-testing is going to take (some major changes here), hopefully not too long. And as long as CORE hasn't been migrated to Doomsday I'll happily stick to CORE... ;)

As I trying to do my best to improve CORE I would like to add sth from me.
CORE 0.11 even without AI is still much better than HSR in my opinion. Changes to tech trees, unit values, economy as a whole. makes this mod unique. And I can pretty say that it is improving all the time.
i will do agree that now with release of doomsday and our devs testing it , we are getting little late, and that starts to annoy me too.
But as Hagar wrote I will stick to CORE.

Well, the future release of 0.2 isn't dependent on us testing Doomsday (or did you mean that the Betas were tied up with DD work?). As a group we haven't made any real moves regarding it.

There are things you don't know about that making things drag out (that I don't feel any inclination whatsoever in discussing), as we finish the last of the tech trees (and the other things that are dependent thereof).
