I'm playing France, and earlier in the game, my non-aligned France was fighting Axis countries with the Democratic Allies. When that war was successfully concluded, France gained a fair amount of territory in the Balkans at the Peace Conference. The Allies then wanted me to join them in a war against the Soviets, and when I refused, they kicked me out, which led me to join the faction of China et al, called The People's Front. Ultimately, my new faction was attacked by the Allies, and France went to war against them, joined by the Soviets. The Allies had some early success against me in the Balkans, seizing territory I had won at the previous peace conference. Then, while I was busy elsewhere against the Allies, the Soviets took those provinces back. When you examine those provinces now, they still show France as the "owner," but they are controlled by the Soviets. I can't build anything there; they are treated like any other foreign territory that I never owned. The Allies are essentially defeated now, and there will soon be another Peace Conference. What happens to those areas I supposedly own but which are occupied by my Soviet ally? Will they automatically revert to me without any designated act of mine? Will I have to choose them as part of my division of spoils from the war? Or will they automatically become owned by the Soviets without my having any chance to reclaim them?

Won't change till that 'war' is over, and the majors are defeated.

Yes, I understand that. But the war is essentially over, and a new Peace Conference will soon take place where the spoils of victory will be distributed. My question is how those specific provinces will be treated at the Peace Conference. Will they be considered mine? Will they be considered Soviet? Will they be up for grabs by whomever claims them?

In this case, you should get the land you own back before the actual peace process (and without costing you any of your warscore), this might not be true if it is considered a core for one of your allies, but not sure.

Thanks, and I hope you're right; it's obviously what I think should happen. Some of this territory was originally part of Romania, and some of it was originally part of Bulgaria. A little of it may have been part of Hungary; I would have to examine the claims to be sure (a good idea, I suppose). I don't think any of it was considered a Soviet core, but I will check on that thanks to your post. When the Soviets captured it, the area was part of the Yugoslavian Confederation, which was born out of the Peace Conference following Germany's defeat. They became part of the Allies faction. Ironically, my French forces were actually responsible in a big way from saving them from being overrun by Germany during that war. It's been an entertaining game.

I just really don't understand that peace cobferences
I always (except for achievement hunting) use Player-led peace conferences, where I give everyone fair amount of territory without worrying about USA releasing Southern France or UK dismantling French colonial empire even though they are in the same faction. Also, Paradox, please remove releasable Occitania, UK and USA always puppet them and destroy the joy of playing multiplayer when you play Free France.
