Its kinda hard for me to understand the true policy on external links here.

Is it ok to link youtube videos in a discussion to try to more accurately explain a subject?

7. {No External Links} You will not post a link to an external website or forum without prior approval of an Administrator. (Sites with no user interaction (that only host media are okay, as long as that media meets and obeys all other rules) You will not link to images on other websites unless you have authorization to do so (or the site is designed for that purpose). This kind of "hot linking" is stealing the bandwidth of the server you link from, and is not appreciated. You will not post material (including text, images, graphics or other artwork) unless the copyright is owned by you, and/or Paradox, and/or the material is not in violation of any NDA (non-disclosure agreement) that you may have signed, and/or you have the expressed permission of the copyright holder to do so, and/or you fully attribute the holder of the copyrighted material.

Yes. You can even embed the link using the "Media" button on the topbar when typing your post.

Imgur or Youtube are "a site [...] designed for that purpose" (linking images and videos).

As gigau said, yes you can link to youtube. The preference is that you embed the video, rather than directly link.

What about linking to a news site like Breaking Defense, in order to aid in explaining a topic in a discussion? I was wanting to do that in this post here. If you put in that phrase in Google you will have the relevant article come up as the first search result. Since I dont know if it is ok to link, Im assuming I probably shouldnt directly link it here right now even if this is a rule discussion in the rule subforum.

Now think about what the massive difference in the military funding between the US and the rest of the world gives us, outspending most of the rest of the world put together, and spending it every year. You cant just snap your fingers and get some magic ships. However, there is no reason why you shouldnt be able to build multiple corvettes or destroyers at the same time, they would take up less drydock space than cruisers or battleships.

There is an article you should read to know the reality of this subject in a much greater understanding. Look up "Why America Really Needs ITEP Engines" from Breaking Defense. I would link it, but Im not sure if putting up external links is allowed.

Best bet is to ask a moderator first.... the rule does say "without prior approval of an admin". If it links to an article with no discussion, you'll be fairly safe.

Who do I contact right now if there is a link to a news website I want to post?

I see no issues with linking to a news website. The rule is in place because we don't want our forums to become some form of springboard to drive traffic to other community sites (we do, ofc, want our community to hang out here :p). However if it's a news article that relates to a thread, go for it.

I thought the rule also was there to prevent another interforum war.
