Question (last for today, I promise) : Multiple Equipment Types for a Battalion ?

Clarification : Will multiple Equipment Pools feed into one single Battalion/Regiment type?

For example, will a Motorized Infantry Battalion draw Equipment from :

- the "Infantry Small Arms" Pool (SMGs, Rifles, Light MGs)
- the "Infantry AT" Pool (initially AT Rifles then evolving into recoilless AT weapons like the Panzerfaust, Bazooka, Panzerschreck, etc)
- the "Trucks" Pool, which is responsible for both the significantly higher production cost (it speaks for itself that the Wehrmacht never fully motorized and that the USSR's Infantry Formations were literally motorized by the USA) and higher supply consumption and maintenance costs when in the field.

Will the above be the case?

Trucks are abstracted... because everything uses trucks more or less and building trucks is not particularly sexy or interesting, so we lump it together with the other infantry equipment needed: small arms, grenades, uniforms or what have you.

Battalion types can draw multiple types, so a motorized battalion will use more basic infantry equipment to simulate a higher number of trucks and such. A mechanized will need both basic infantry equipment and half tracks etc

This stuff is fully moddable so I'm sure there will be mods where you have to build individual socks or bullets if you really want to play HoI4: Quartermaster Edition :)

Talking about equipment: as the lack of having them makes your units less effective (I assume), is it possible to define what sort of penalty the unit gets? For example, if I have trucks and at-weapons as separate equipment, could I make it so that the lack of trucks makes the unit slower whereas the lack of at-weapons decreases the unit's hard attack? Or would the lack of either one just have the same overall effect?

Just make sure there are enough modifiers possible that equipment can modify ( things like movement speed boost on good roads, weather/mud vulnerability, dug in cap ) so that it is meaningful to do these mods where we can separate out things like trucks or mines/HMGs/Mortars from general infantry equipment and I will be a very happy camper :)

yes, equipment gives most of the stats to units, so if you split it up you could get exactly the effect you want.

So, motorized infantry that are equipped with mark 1 hover trucks can move faster than units with five ton trucks, and have different terrain penalties?

How about the American shipments of trucks to the Soviets? Or upgrading an airborne unit with heavy equipment?

Is the solution to both circumstances simply an increase in generic "equipment"?

I imagine so...

This looks awesome; and thank you podcat for making this modable. For me, this is going to be key. I can't wait to mod in the different guns/trucks/bullets. It'll add a good amount of realistic complexity. Not sure if I want to go quite as far as socks though!

The quatermaster Edition was good one :D

But I would like to see trucks (and horses) in Vanilla edition. I think it would be super sexy and intresting and it would give lotz of flavour to the game.

It would be cool when you can use captured trucks or you can lose all you trucks when you are retreating and run out of fuel.

 That is bad. But, let's hope that mods or later DLC will change it, because i think now PI will not do it.
It would be realistic when the shortage of trucks on the fronts would lead to a decrease in movement speed of divisions.

Would be interesting to have other types of equipment not deployed in actual battalions too.

Three that comes to mind right away are stationary heavy AA installations, factory equipment and rolling stock ( trains ) deployed on the provinces.

That way Strategic bombers could inflict an Industrial cost by bombing provinces and you would need to pay equipment in order to repair the AA, IC and Infrastructure quickly back to 100%. The latter two would also fit quite good to be sent as lend lease trade to Soviet.

In such case, STRATs would not only bomb IC, but you would also need IC to repair the damaged IC, because factory equipment would be produced by IC (let's ignore the IC types for simplicity). So you would lose IC and need to spend more IC to get the original IC value back. That could get out of control very quickly and lead to many balance problems, I'm afraid.

Thank you for the answer, Podcat.

I think this should be the first release version as opposed to a bolt-on DLC.

EDIT: & boots, of course. Which are no use at all without the right length bootlaces.
