there are enough no-cd cracks out there, also you can crack it by yourself too.

Yes. The patch program wont see the game installed on your machine (since there is no trace of the game in your registry) and will refuse to install the patch.

depends on how the pirate version is distributed, but mostly wrong too, sadly enough.

yu're right, I deleted this part of my post, if some member of Paradox want to know where to download it to find the thief(and kill him!!!!! :) ) I will of course send the information to them, please PM me then !

Now the bloody thing's on a p2p network (name withheld). Ran across two people offering it whilst surfing during my lunch break. They were wise enough to keep their emails anonymous, else I'd report them. But chances are now that it'll spread like wildfire, if it's a valid copy. One thing I've read that some wiser companies doing is seeding p2p networks with faulty or downright inopperable files to trick the downloaders, who more often than not fly a white flag and give up after a few attempts. Here's hoping that's all these were.

So far, I've seen the game being circulated by two different pirate groups. Whether this means that multiple copies were leaked or not, I don't know.

I don't understand. If some can find pirated copies so easily, why cant paradox prosecute them?

Paradox is the only software company I know of that has the programmers active on the forums (instead of some 3rd party moderators), who take peoples suggestions, and implement them. Worth the money to me.

Don't get me wrong, I think the pirates should be smacked down hard, but I also don't think Paradox will lose much money.

The sort of people who steal like this probably never would have bought a legitimate copy in the first place. If it hadn't been warezed before release it would have been after. If it didn't get warezed the thieves would burn one another copies and so forth.

It sucks, but like I said, I really don't belive many of the warez types would have bought the game retail anyway. They're just scummy that way. These sales were `lost' before the print on the first design document was even dry.

One thing Paradox might consider is taking a look at what Stardock did with Galactic Civilizations. It basically requires you to register with a valid serial number to get patches. Actually I think there's a lot more fancy stuff in there to detect pirate copies but I don't really know much about it. Paradox games usually get so many cool new features that at least the warez versions (or a lot of them anyway) would be stuck with 1.0.

I agree the Gal Civ method seems to be a good way forward.

This was to be expected, but still remains very condemnable and immoral (more so since it happened before the release date).

Seems like press-copies (if it's true that the leak came from that source, from what I've just read here) should always be intentionally "crippled" versions or have some sort of time-lock..

In any case, my copy's already on pre-order, and even if I (like others probably will, unfortunately) could now very easily go and find a pirate copy just to "try" the game because of impatience, I won't. Nope.

Not just because it is illegal (won't go into an argument over this), but because Paradox doesn't deserve it. Despite what some may think, pirates are not doing anyone any favors.....

Sigh. Hopefully something can be done in the meanwhile to reduce the impact of all this...in any case, it may indeed be a good idea to try and track down those that are offering the complete file(s) throughout the net and report them to their ISPs, at least (if not directly threaten them with legal action)...

Well, the sites where you can find pirated copies just claim that they're only offering links and not games themselves, so they aren't doing anything illegal. I don't know whether or not this is actually the case, but as these sites don't seem to be coming down, they may have a legally justified argument. The groups that actually pirate the games are about as faceless and well-hidden as they come, and P2P users are essentially anonymous.

Thus, who could Paradox or their publishers really go after? Groups like the MPAA and RIAA (the movie and recording industry associations) in the States have huge legal departments and ties in Washington, and they can hardly put a dent the piracy of their material. Aside from purposely circulating incomplete or nonfunctioning versions of the game on P2P networks, all Paradox can really do is discourage people from downloading, tighten security in regard to reviewer copies, and push their publishers to be as efficient as possible in getting gold releases on store shelves. Like I said, if this had happened on release day, it wouldn't have been an issue: we'd all be off playing our (legitimate) copies of the game right now!

I totally agree - if they can rush out Victoria I think it would knock all the hipe out of this one.

Yeah...sadly their hands are tied. Maybe next time they could secretly mark each of the copies they send to the press, and if something like this happens again, they'll know who to go after.

Why to make it secret? All beta copies Paradox ships have the name of the beta written in bright white in the opening screen. This way they can actually prevent illegal copies from popping up, at least after release, instead of having a chance to sue somebody.

If it's not secret the crackers know what to look for and they'll take it out.
