[Question] Containing Water Pollution

I have a question regarding water pollution. If we put the water drain pipes along a close water surface like a lake or a pond, will the water pollution be contained? Or will pollution spread inland since there is no stream to move the polluted water away?

My guess is that when all of the existing water is polluted (saturated) it will start to increase the water level and flow inland.

I haven't tried it, but I do think it will raise the water level and overflow.
