I have started 3 World in Flames-Gold-1933 games as the British Empire. I ran one until late 1942, one until mid 1943, and the current one is now in late March 1944. The games have all been set on Normal Difficulty and Furious AI Aggressiveness. The Germans have always Anschlussed Austria, taken Czechoslovakia, and conquered Poland, France, and the Low Countries on or before the historical schedule, and Italy, Japan, and the United States have entered the war in all of them.

But in none of them have German and the Soviet Union gone to war. In the current one, the Soviet Union has declared war on the British, not that that has amounted to much.

This is perplexing and aggravating to me, because I am not remotely good enough as the the British to defeat Germany with the Soviets tying down the bulk of their army and air force.

Is this a known problem? I did not read the entire 118 page thread about WiF in the modder's forum.

Am I doing something wrong? Should I be doing something with diplomacy or intelligence to make the Soviet-German war happen?

Thanks for any help.

Thanks, spannbeton. In all three games, the Germans have occupied Paris and set up Vichy. I should also have mentioned that the Soviets have gotten their usual Ribbentrop Pact occupation zone in Poland, and gone to war with Finland. War with Greece and Yugoslavia has varied. In the current game, as of 1944, Germany and Italy have conquered Yugoslavia, but have not gone to war with Greece.

In all three cases, the Germans have substantially more divisions than the USSR, according to my intel. I did not calculate a ratio, but it was less than 2:1 in all cases. Does it need to be more than 2:1?

Intel can be quite misleading. You might load up as GER and SOV just to check the actual numbers.

Or just use "nofog" cheat, which makes intel 100% accurate.

They should attack sovs as long as they dont outnumber germany by far. and even if not the sovs should attack by approx oct 42.
(I couldnt enact barbarossa sadly, so i had them attack me. Bloody war of attrition and we are both out of oil, so i had to invade and puppet venezuela)

As soviet in 1941, Germany ran out of oil at October. This isn't historical at all.

OK, I did so. In the game where I played the UK and quit as of August 1942:

Germany = 496 total divisions plus 70 allied (Italy and Yugoslavia only) // Manpower = 2431.7 / Oil = 111K. // IC = 604/463 // Dissent = 3.39% // Unternehmen Barbarossa decision = GREEN.
Soviet Union = 300 total divisons plus 8 allied // Manpower = 6692.1 // OIC = 320/260 // Dissent = 0.00%

In the game I played as UK and quit as of March 1944:

Germany = 535 total divisions plus 218 allied // Manpower = 2120.0 // Oil = 262K // IC = 615/469 // Dissent = 2.90% // Unternehmen Barbarossa decision = GREEN.
Soviet Union = 292 total division plus 9 allied // Manpower = 18602.1 //IC = 267/232 // Dissent = 0.00%

In the 1944 game, the Soviet Union was actually at war with the UK.

It looks to me like it requires a human player to make the Barbarossa decision. Is that the case?

I think I am using WiF-Gold, Eugenioso, but I may have screwed up. I'll check. Thanks for the suggestion!

Later: I checked, and the opening screen does not say "Gold Edition" in gold cursive script the way it does in the picture in page 116 of the World in Flames thread of the mods forum. What other way is there to tell? My recollection is that I did not successfully download WiF until after the Gold edition came out.
