I played one demo game, okay partial (due to no save option ;) )

I noticed technologies are ALOT faster in advancing than EU2. Is this on purpose, are there more levels to progress through? In EU2 there were a max of 10 government for example. Since the game has been released can we get a tech chart of some sort?

There are 60 levels for each of the five tech areas. Here's what each level does:
Government: unlocks buildings, national ideas, and government types.
Land: increases unit stats and unlocks new units.
Naval: see Land
Production: increases production efficiency (see in your budget as a percentage) and unlocks some buildings
Trade: increases trade efficiency (again, in the budget) and unlocks some buildings
