I'm playing the Iroquois, westernized, got a foothold in Europe, everything is nice. I don't have any PUs. Now all of a sudden, the game says that the ruler of Burgundy died, without an heir, so Castile gets a PU with them, unless I contest the succession, in which case a succession war starts. Question is: If I do start this war, what do I get if I win it (PU or inheriting the counties), and on which side will Burgundy fight, me or Castile? I'm attaching a screenie of the window that popped up.

Here's how succession wars work (based on my experience with them):

1. A PU is formed
2. The overlord's most powerful rival is given the option to initiate the succession war. Wargoal: Occupy the lesser PU partner's capital.
3. The PU is a peace term, costing 60%

So, basically, Castile and Burgundy are already in a PU. You have a chance to fight Castile for it. Burgundy will be supporting Castile. You can win and get the PU, or use the warscore for other stuff.

If you do contest it, Burgundy will fight with Castile - or rather, it will enter under a PU with Castile, which you are then attempting to break through war.

I wouldn't go for it, myself. Burgundy looks a bit shitty in this, it's nearly at the end of the game, so you wouldn't be able to integrate it, and I doubt it has any returnable cores left. If Castile gets the PU, it'll enable Castile to contest French dominance - which is good for you, because you want to maintain the balance of power in Europe.

Thanks for the answers, I think I'll leave it. As you said, there wouldn't be enough time to integrate it, and this way Castile and France may keep each other busy while I get the rest of Great Britain, and look for my next prey.
