Hi guys,

I am very new to modding and have therefore hit a bit of an impass with my current project. I am trying to create a mod based on a book series about a fictional family of Earls in medieval England called the Warringhams.

My goal is first of all to successfully add the province (near Kent/Rochester according to the books), as a de jure vassal of England and the duchy of Kent. Of course I also wish to add the corresponding dynasty with norman roots by the name of "of Warringham" with a specific coat of arms. Much later on I want to add certain events and custom traits but that is, of course, far down the road. :D

I have managed to add the province. However in game it is simply empty and not selectable and I cannot manage to find the mistake. While reading the Wiki page on province modding, I also do not understand which "localisation" file I need to edit for this to work.

Finally, I wanted to ask whether I need to creat a b_title.txt file for all subtitles in my province? And how do I add the province as a de jure vassal to Kent and England? Is it enough to add this in landed_titles.txt?

I have attached a zip file of my WIP mod, and would be really grateful for some help, with this very big project for an amateur :D

Thanks!

Hey, welcome to the forum !

The first thing to fix is that your mod is way too heavy :eek: (and impossible to review as is !)
Only include in your mod the vanilla files you have actually altered (mostly the province and title history).
And if you add new content (characters, dynasties, traits, events, ...) always do it in separate files in the corresponding folder.

I have managed to add the province. However in game it is simply empty and not selectable and I cannot manage to find the mistake. While reading the Wiki page on province modding, I also do not understand which "localisation" file I need to edit for this to work.

I assume you've followed https://ck2.paradoxwikis.com/Map_modding#Adding_a_province ?
The localization can go in any file, with localization key is PROV12345 (if 12345 is the province id)

Finally, I wanted to ask whether I need to creat a b_title.txt file for all subtitles in my province? And how do I add the province as a de jure vassal to Kent and England? Is it enough to add this in landed_titles.txt?

You usually don't need history for baronies.
For making a title de jure, I'd avoid modifing landed_titles.txt for a few changes.
Instead you can add your new titles in a separate file of the folder, and alter the de jure structure via history modding (this is sometimes called "dynamic de jure").

For instance in vanilla k_germany.txt (which is defined under e_germany in landed_titles.txt)
Code:
867.1.1={
   de_jure_liege = e_hre
}

Thanks for the help and the warm welcome, Romulien! :D

Removing everything except the files that I've edited was a pretty great tip, so we're of to a great start ;)

I have tried to implement your advice and it has worked to some degree, I'm sure there is something missing. I have tried your de jure tip and created a new localisation file with just the new county. I have tried filling the code line with c_warringham as well as PROV1995, neither seemed to work.

For simplicity, I copied the history of c_kent until the norman conquest. The title should theoretically be in the hands of my fictional dynasty (ID: 1900041) by 1069. The first Earl should be: charid: 100000001

My fictional Character and dynasty are in the game by that time (wohoo!) however the county is still grayed out, and for some reason the console now states, that c_warringham is an invalid title. Did I delete to many files? And why is the county not selectable in game?

Thanks again for your help and patience! I have attached the mod file again. It is quite a bit smaller now :D

You need to add a modded map/default.map, and increase the max_provinces line to 1996 (the province tag of your added province + 1)

Have you updated the province number in default.txt file in the map file? It needs to be the number of provinces +1.

You don't have a file in common/landed_titles putting c_warringham (and its component baronies) in the appropriate duchy.

Ok thanks for your help! I have updated the max provice count to 1996. I have also added c_warringham as a de jure vassal to d_canterbruy. It still doesn't seem to work however.

Do I maybe need a /map/positions.txt file? But I can't really use the nudge tool if my province doesn't exist or isn't selectable....

You've got an extra closing bracket in your dynasties file, between religion = catholic and used_for_random = no.
You've got two religion = catholic lines in your custom dynasty. You only need one, but that probably isn't hurting anything.
This is the thing that's breaking the county: you haven't closed your c_warringham.txt file with a closing bracket.

You're also missing the following localizations:

Great, I'll take a look at it, thanks!

One more quick question about the localisation errors. I have added localisations for all the barony titles in the same localisation file (the _adj one I forgot). I don't understand why the errors still appear... :/

For future reference:
Put any added dynasties in a separate file in common/dynasties/
Put any added localizations in a separate file in localisations/
Put any added characters in a separate file in history/characters/
Put any added titles in a separate file in common/landed_titles, within a block giving their de jure liege (if applicable)

This all makes it easier to troubleshoot.

Do these "extra" files have any naming conventions (e.g. would I name the file 00_dynasties.txt, and keep the file empty except for the custom dynasty), or would I name it something like dynasty_warringham.txt?

They just have to be unique. (Not duplicating the file name of any vanilla file in that directory, or any file name in any other mod you expect to be used with it at the same time.)

Exception: if you want to override a localization tag in your mod, you need to put that tag and its localization in a file that will load before the vanilla file with that tag. Load order is in strict ASCII order (numbers before alpha, upper case before lower case, underscore between upper case and lower case.) Caveat: this has been known to change between patches.
