I have been watching the last few WWW and there was a question from the viewers regarding the variants. Why both are not producing variants although they have such a high amount of combat experience.
The answer was, they would not loose the production efficiency.

Now my question is -> Has producing a variant of e.g. a tank as much impact on production efficiency as changing to a new model? For me it seems that producing a variant where everything is the same except the gun or the engine or some armor plates should not change the efficiency that much, as changing to a new model. So it would make sense for me to develop a model further which is already in field because of collected experience than switching to the new model.

Is there a difference in efficiency loss between changing to a new model than changing to a other variant?

Hi, yes there is not as much loss in eff. Wiki says:

Production Efficiency[edit]
Each Production Line has an efficiency value associated with it. The higher the efficiency, the faster the Production Line produces Equipment, up to a maximum value. Running the same Production Line continuously increases its Production Efficiency.

Changing a Production Line to a different type of Equipment reduces its efficiency depending on how drastic the change is. From least to most:

  • -25%?: Different variant of the same model (e.g. Panzer III Ausf. F -> Panzer III Ausf. G)
  • -50%: Different model of the same chassis (e.g. Panzer III -> StuG III)
  • -75%?: Different chassis of the same family (e.g. Panzer III -> Panzer IV)
Ships under production can be converted into another variant for increased production time depending on how large the change is and how far into production the ship is

I'd also like to remind that variants suffer decreased reliability (which can only be countered to some extent by buffing the "reliability" stat) so if you're going to fight the Rasputitsa or the Finnish Winter you're going to do somewhat better with basic models than fine-tuned variants (except those tuned specifically for reliability).

Reliability of Variants is not really a problem - just ad 1 point to Reliability, for every 2 points to other parts - in that case Reliability will be exactly same as that of base model.

I think there's a 3rd - They can't get the gearing bonus up high enough already because of the restarts, and they need every little bit of gearing just to produce what they need. Not sure how the gearing works for a line that has zero gearing though - would they lose 25% of 0 (no loss), or would the penalty keep anything from being produced until the 25% of full efficiency is made up?

I guess Germany just did not need it, seeing how they munched through SU. Although, considering the credit given to Daniel for his HoI4 skills, would the variant system be useful, he might have used it? And Johan... well i guess he WAS busy doing other stuff. As far as I perceived it, he is not the most experienced player?

Daniel started playing late in WWW so he hasn´t had too much time to play around with variants and other things as he has had problems with producing even basic infantry equipment.

And on other point in my mind variants are usefull only if you can´t do with the basic models like IRL americans introduced Firefly cause their tanks couldn´t penetrate german tanks armour. So variants would be usefull if for example your tanks are in disadvantage compared to enemies. If you can do with the basic model there is no need to make variants.

I think the main reason we did not see variants i WWW is Soviets lose so easily in real life before the Barbarossa Campaign Germans thought that their panzers are very powerfull that win aganist every tanks allies could throw to them but once they met T-34s and KV-1s they realized they need better tank and equipment. If Daniels Germany had advance slowy in USSR they were in very big problem but Trosky made everything easy for him. Russian winter did not effect his army at all. Also Johan wasted a lot IC for making his army motorized so he could not use it for more inf divisions then at the Syria we saw his supply problem because of low infra. If a human player was playing USSR i think things would be much more hard for Daniel. Anyway we will se what will happen next today

I thought the problem was that variants would be more expensive and all sides were struggling just to get out enough basic equipment for their armies.
In WWW7 Johan created a Light Cruiser variant and it did not cost more. It may be different for ground units.

(Southampton is the standard class and Sunderland the new variant)
