I've been playing as Venice, and I've found it very annoying that I get punished if I want to keep my ruler by losing Republic Tradition. Does this ever change? Or will I be stuck choosing a 1-4-1 ruler every four years to keep my tradition up??

You can lower your Republican Tradition until you become a monarchy. Then you don't have to worry about stupid elections anymore and then you can diplo-vassalize countries and make PUs.

Paraodx nerfed Republics in EU IV. Almost every republic in this game sucks (Noble and Dutch Republic are ok..)

You shd re elect if your racing through idea groups. But if the current ruler is more than 60 years old, its better not to reelecr him. Keeping your tradition around high 70s to 80s is fine. Those negative events that pop up in low RT is somewhat reduced in frequency in 1.4. Not sure if 1.5 has changed it somewhat.

Re-elect when you're at 100 RT and the Doge is not too old, then wait until RT is back up to 100. Beware that integrating vassals costs 10 RT.

Some people advocate letting your RT drop to around 40 and relying on events that can then trigger to keep you from reverting to a monarchy. You can also switch to a noble republic that has an 8 year cycle.

still hope that Paradox will make the royal palace a building that can also work as a republic (changing it's name to "parliament" or something alike when the government is a republic) and giving republican tradition (+0.5 since +1 is way too big)

Ok thanks for the info guys. I appreciate it. Also, what are some good ideas to take as Venice? I want to colonize Africa but my distance is wayyy far, I think even too far with exploration idea?

You don't need to keep republican tradition close to 100 OP, only when you are in negative stability, and even then only if you're short on ADM (which should be never if you're a republic) and don't have some stability cost reduction. I manage with RT ranging from 60 to 90+, when RT is low you get events that increase the RT for a bit of prestige or some other negligible thing.

Since Venice is geared for trade, colonizing Africa will be of little use as their trade flows into Western Europe, I'd recommend colonizing/conquering Asia and steering the trade to Venice through India. You will still need some bases in Africa to extend your range. The easiest way is to conquer some island in the Mediterranean, then some province from North Africa or the Baleares and that should be enough to reach one of the western Africa provinces, from there just go hoping from province to province as far as your range allows, or just colonize all of Africa if you feel like it.

Only Ireland and Novgorod are worth starting as a republic due to that delicious +1 republican tradition, though I do try and steer France towards being a merchant republic because MOAR MERCHANTS.

Ireland as a merchant republic is ridiculous, I might add.

I tried out the Hansa recently, and re-elected constantly. When you get low in RT you get an event that costs 1 stab for 20 RT; this is easily worth re-elections as it equates to 144 monarch points per 10 RT, or 288 per 20, so as long as your ruler is reasonably young re-election is worthwhile...even more so with religious ides or ideas that lower stabcost.

I also did a game with Tibet lately where I took the -3 stab to stay a republic. I spent a lot of time on military advisors to build up the tech and just used vassal feeding + re election + advisors, seemed to outperform most of the Indian nations and wound up ahead of many Muslims in military.

There's a lot to be said for chosen MP distribution, 0 regency chance (can be huge if you get stuck in a few 10+ year ones), and a floor of 6 monarch points.

This, right here.

The event that essentially trades a stability for 20 Republic Tradition has a MTTH of 10 year, and in a Merchant Republic, the election cycle is 4. Thus, if we rely on the MTTH (Which granted, doesn't always occur, but it's just as likely to occur early than it is to occur late), over two election cycles we'll lost 20 RT to re-election, and gain 28, from both the event and base RT gain.

I'm not saying you'll steadily go back to 100 or anything, because the event only triggers under 50 RT. But it's still a reliable enough way of maintaining a 6/6/6 leader. You should only re-elect if your leader is under 40, preferably in his low thirties. In terms of rulers, my 250 year Hansa game had approximately 24 years when I wasn't re-electing, because the leaders I got were too young. For another sixty years, I was re-electing my leaders up to 6/6/6. That's about 126 years of having a 6/6/6 ruler, which has put me ahead of the rest of Europe in terms of both tech and ideas.

iJoqjQ1.jpgl

As you can see, my Republican Tradition is also in the mid 50s. So the event is fairly reliable - I did, however, have one hiccup where I went down to 28 RT. Then, I was lucky, and the event fired twice in two election cycles.

I agree that Republics have been nerfed in EU4, and it's kind of disappointing how little attention they have got. I'd like to think that the devs simply forgot the extra buildings for RT, getting extra for trading in Chinaware, a faster regen from higher prestige... but given that they nerfed the Irish and Novgorod ideas, I'd say that they deliberately prevent people from super high RT, because apparently the disadvantages of Republics don't outweigh constantly having a demi-god Staatholter.

low Republican Tradition rules -- if you stay below 50RT, there is an event that lets you trade +3 merchantilism for -2 RT. This way you can hit 100% mercantilism.

100% mercantilism means enormous trade power from buildings -- in my Hansa game, my 3 provinces in Antwerpen node w/ level 6 trade buildings at 100% merchantilism were giving more power than rest of France/Austria/etc provinces in Antwerpen node
