Why do I build in spice, salt, coffee, slaves, ivory or luxuries provinces? Manus of refeneries?

I am currently playing my first game as Portugal and I am colonizing parts of Africa, Brazil and the Carribean. I have a TP on Flores and am exploring SE Asia. TOT hasn't happened (yet). It is 1521.

You should, when you can, build a Fine Arts Academy in Tago. After that, you should build refineries (breweries) in Algarve and Oporto. Do not worry that they are "right" provinces (that is, that they have the income boosting goods in them), because the boost to income is only from 66d per year to 72d per year, not enough to concern you.

After you have built manufactories in your "home" provinces, and if you do not intend to take territory from Spain, then you have to be careful about building manufactories in colonial provinces. You will want to defend them well, else one of your enemies will enter the province and you run the risk of having the thing burnt to the ground. Islands are good spots, because you can defend them with both fleet and ground forces, and enemies landing to try to take the island do so at a significant disadvantage in die roll.

Again, do not hesitate to put any manufactory anywhere you like. If you have a safe spot for it, AND it happens to be a province that gives the extra 6d a year, all the better. :)

Roughly speaking, manus are a good investment up until they cost about 4K a piece (ignoring inflation). As DSYoungEsq mentioned, breweries are very valuable as Portugal. You should try to get a weapon manufactury or two also since they raise your support limit.

Another thing you should do is grab them in peace agreements. There are often a surprizing number in your non-European enemies' lands.

North American Indian nations quite often get them. If you do try this tactic though try not to invade with too many armies into a province. Each time an army enters an enemy prov with a manu there is a chance they will burn it down.

Are there any more precise data on it? I mean - on probability? Does it also include a revolt (they are not "entering" the province).

It's not a very common result, but it does happen often enough that it is annoying. It's enough of a probability that some MP players will run armies of cavalry around trying to destroy enemy manufactories by chance if the GM has not posted a rule against it.

I seem to recall someone figuring out rough percentages once a couple years ago, but without a search function, well, you know.

and how about random manus? Does moving the slider to 10 increase one's chances to get some?

FAQ says:
Code:
94030	Unexpected Invention	(INNOVATIVE 7+, infra 3)(gain manufactury)
94031	Unexpected Invention	(INNOVATIVE 9+, infra 4)(gain manufactury)

but apart from this - does Innovative +10 give you a better chance to get a manu than 9 or - earlier in the game - 7?

I don't think being ahead of 9 really matters at all.

In fact, I rarely move the slider all the way full because it's a waste of a stability hit. You're going to get random/event effects that change the sliders anyway. No use in wasting a stability hit to make it full.

If you have reached Infrastructure Technology 3, and you have your domestic policy slider for Innovation set to 7 or higher, you qualify for random event 94030, Unexpected Invention.

If you have thereafter reached Infrastructure Technology 4, and you have your domestic policy slider for Innovation set to 9 or higher, you also qualify for random event 94031, Unexpected Invention.

Thus, reaching Infra 4 and setting your slider to Innov. 9+ (9 or 10) doubles your chance of getting a random manufactory.

Does anyone know the criteria for having the event "Devastating Fire"?

I really hate that event and want to prevent it as much as possible.....

Although I'm assuming its completely random and has no criteria other than you having a Manu somewhere...

Countrysize. Only 30+ countries get it. From the random eventsfile:
'Reintroduced for nations of size 30+ Real monarchs don't cry.'

I recommend the FAQ forum, where there is a thread patiently put together, which spells out in excruciating detail all the various random events. ;)
