So started a game as Flanders today. Everything was going great until I received a notification that I needed to elect an heir for my kingdom (I rebelled from France and became a vassal of the HRE so that I could easily get the last remaining counties). I found this odd because I had already elected an heir, my genius grandson. When I went back to the screen to chose an heir he was not present. I have been messing around with it trying to get him to become an heir, but no luck!

Anyone know why this is?

Hmm you wrote "elect for my kindom" thats odd. Which kindom? did you form the frisian kindom or are you sub vassall of any other vassall king of the HRE?
maybe it is the heir of the HRE you can vote for as duke of flanders and thats why you cant nomminate your children? thats my guess.

Yeah i formed the kingdom of Frisia a while ago. I got lucky and was able to form a claim on the duchy of Normandy, putting me in a prime position to rebel from France.

I think Varvs nailed it, you are part of 2 votes. One for the HRE and one for your own holdings. Also the engine seems weird at times, sometimes I can nominate grandkids and sometimes not!! If you handed grandkid land, he should always be able to be nominated in your own lands from what I have seen. But I am sure someone will have an instance where this is not true!! :)

The issue is though I have granted him land, so I don't understand why he has to be excluded from succession. Even some idiot in central Germany is able to be nominated, so why not my grandson?

Do you have a screenshot? And are you sure it is for Frisia and not the HRE? Your comment about someone from central Germany makes me suspect it's the HRE election.

If it indeed is the Frisian election, is the granson's parent from your line still alive? They don't inherit claims until after the deaths of their parents, so if this is the case, you'll need to make said character a duke in order to have them be eligible in the election.

Its seems like this is the vote for the crown of the HRE.
the current emperor and his offspring and all other dukes/kings are allowed to vote for the successor.

Be careful of landing people you'd like to succeed you though.
I landed a 20-year-younger second cousin once-removed with one of my counties and nominated him.
My ruler lived to be 82; the cousin died in his early 50s.
His heir was terrible, THAT man's heir was terrible; I gave him the duchy so he'd have -30 Counties Desired penalty.
He rebelled, I took the (well-developed) county back.
