So I have a game running as Ireland and I have united the British isles after many long wars. I have also taken a chunk of Spain and Britanny. I have Irish rulers in most place (with a few Norse, they conquered England before I did). My question is how exactly does cultural conversion work? A few provinces have changed to Irish, but most has remained the same.

Edit: I also have a question about de jure drift in Empires. Like I said above, I own the kingdoms of Portugal and Britanny. They are not being incorporated into the Empire of Britanina, however. Is there no drift for empires?

If you and your direct vassal (duke or king) are of the same culture, the provinces that vassal control can change culture. It doesn't happen very quickly, though.

As for Portugal and Britanny, do you possess the entire kingdom? All duchies and counties? If yes, then it'll take 100 years for those to drift into your empire.

I own the entire kingdom for both. I have held Brittany for fifteen years and Portugal for two, but there is no drift shown when I turn on the empire filter. Is it maybe because I do not directly control the territory? Brittany is under the control of a vassal king, although I do own a county. Portugal is split between two dukes, but I own the king title.

County culture conversion requires that the local ruler, and all the rulers above him are of the same culture. It can happen in two ways.

1 : Spread
it can spread from one county to any bordering county with a ruler of that culture. So if one county is Irish and the county next to it is Scottish but has an Irish ruler, it can happen that his county will become Irish. Rulers with high stewardship increase the chance of the event firing. So appoint high stewardship rulers in border areas. It still takes awhile, even with a 13+ stewardship ruler it still has an average firing time of 40 years, it is even higher with bad steward. It also fires on a character level, so only one conversion in 40 years per ruler. appointing a lot of counts will increase the speed because they usually only have 1 county.

2 : the Settler event
the rulers capital converts to the rulers culture when this event fires. it only happens if the rulers capital is not bordering any counties of his culture. it also requires the rulers highest title is of his culture or has been conquered through war by someone of his culture. High stewardship increases the chance here aswell.

the best way for large kingdoms and empires to start spread their culture is to wait untill a ruler has triggered the settler event and then ensure that the rulers around him are good stewards.

RE: De Jure drift of kingdoms; there seems to be a bug right now where if the Kingdom Title is held, even by one of your vassals or yourself, the kingdom will not drift at all. There needs to be no kingdom title holder for it to drift.

Ah, many thanks. So it is a bug. And I would rather have the kingdom title than the drift, so I guess I will just go with it.

The big thing is stewardship. The average time to happen for both culture change events is 100 years. A bad steward will turn that into well over 100 years -- so pretty much never. An excellent steward can get that down to 30 years -- so reasonably fast. You want your counts and dukes to have very high stewardship if you want culture change.

The problem is the AI tends not to train it's kids in stewardship. It's often I get half my counts and dukes with a stewardship of 3 or 4. So if you don't intervene, you'll get pretty much no culture change ever. The only way to fix it is to personally educate every child in the line of succession anywhere in your realm. Which in a big nation is a real pain to do. But it's the only way to get culture change quickly.
