Question about county borders

I'm just wondering what significance the thickness of a county border has. It's been bothering me for a while and I can't find an answer anywhere - not in the FAQ, not in the manual or with Google. I'm new, as one might guess.

For some context I can add that my character is the king of Sweden. He holds the de jure duchy of Östergötland (Östergötland, Närke and Södermanland) and the county of Östergötland. I gave away Närke and Södermanland to my characters brothers and that's when the borders went from thin to thick and the county shields showed up on the map. I've included a screenshot bellow.

The Thick lines represent the actual de-facto borders within your kingdom. That is why they appeared when you gave two regions away, because you created two new vassal entities.

Areas within the thick borders are owned or vassalized by one individual. Each thick bordered area should have one shield from this character- usually a Duke. The thick border will go away if a Duke's vassal revolts which seems to be the case up North.
