Hi everyone. I have some questions about the coalition/alliance mechanics in my current game. Since it's Ironman and the future of my country depends on how the mechanics work it would be awesome if you could help me out.

I started as Brandenburg and after forming Prussia now own most of Germany as well as large parts of the southern Baltic Sea coast. I also have the emperor title, but I currently only have one vote from my loyal vassal, Saxony, and one from myself, while Austria has two votes in addition to their own. Switzerland, the other elector I had counted on in the past after having liberated them and bestowed them as an elector, is meanwhile too far out of range. My ruler is 63 so I have to get rid of the Palatinate (who I recently reduced to one province), one of Austria's electors, as fast as possible, before the next election. Most of the members of the HRE absolutely despise me and have formed a large coalition against me, which unfortunately France has now joined too with their army of 300.000 men and their personal union with Portugal.

Now, my own army is mighty enough and with my discipline of 150 I feel confident enough to take on the coalition with the help of my allies, in particular Spain and Hungary. When I hover over the war declaration against the Palatinate, my allies say they will join my war. However, France will probably become the war leader, and they share several of my allies. So, what will these allies do? Will they a) join me as indicated, b) regard it as a defensive war and join France, c) stay uninvolved, or does it d) depend on other factors how they will behave? I should note that when I hover over a war declaration against France directly, our shared allies refuse to join me.

Also, more generally, in coalitions does only the war leader get to call allies? Or the attacked country? Both? Or possibly all coalition members? Austria, who was the war leader in recent wars, is allied with Russia, and needless to say I would prefer to keep them out of the picture. The same is true of Sweden, who are allied with the Palatinate but not with France. Will they join the war? I don't want to get involved in a war at four fronts...

Well, I haven't had this situation, but usually my allies have answered my call before the warleader switch occurs. It's the "no" allies who you can count on being on the other side. I'd also check truces in case France becomes WL very quickly, as well as the "ally in another war" problem which might prevent them from fighting against anyone on the other side.
