Hi I'm new to the game and have been toying around with Brazil since I'm aware that it's recommended for new players.

In my very first game of Victoria (with Revolutions installed too) I had a largely liberal population in Brazil and without doing anything myself a capitalist population in my capital. Each game since then has started with a wholly conservative population and obviously would require upgrading clerks to get capitalists.

Did I miss something? I can't really work out anything I've done differently in my later games with the country but the game is obviously complicated and I might have overlooked something or possibly clicked through an event the first time without realising.

I did apply the 1.4 patch between my first game and my subsequent games, is that what made the difference?

(You do start with a Capitalist POP in Rio de Janeiro, always)

Where did you check your population's ideological beliefs? At the election screen, or at the nation stats' one? Because for the former, it only displays the affiliation of those able to vote, while at the nation stats' one, it always displays everyone's ideology.

Also, the 1.4 patch is intended for regular Victoria only (I made the same mistake). You'll might have to re-install the game to get rid of it.

I checked at the national stats level and each time the starting position is 100% conservative.

Also I definitely don't have capitalists in Rio de Janeiro.

I think I'll try reinstalling.

Just reinstalled in the correct order. Thanks for pointing out it had been done in the incorrect order.

I think I was originally reading the political readings incorrectly before as you suggested too.

Definitely still no capitalists in Brazil at the beginning of a grand campaign game though.
