Quest: The Spanish Search For Gold

Gold1.jpg

Episode IX: Here There Be Gold

Jackie Powers: Hello and welcome once again to “Quest!” Tonight’s show is packed to the brim with excitement. We have exploits of explorers and conquistadors, we have new and exciting doors opening up for Spain both at home and abroad, we have wonderful discovery and a terrible loss and we have a great guest coming out in a moment to help us sort through it all. (walking over to the couches) But first, let’s so hello to our judges. Today we have King Midas and Goldfinger assisting. How are you gentlemen?

King Midas: Well, thank you. Wonderful to be back, Jimmy.

Goldfinger: I said I wasn’t coming back until we found something, so you better not be jerking my chain.

JP: Very well, Goldfinger. Let’s get going. Most of these years between 1500 and 1510 are spent colonizing the new world that has finally opened up to Spain. After sending the first few out in 1499 and 1500, their first real colony begins to spring up in Puerto Rico, but subsequent attempts to further it along were failures in 1501.

King Midas: I wonder what they are paying this Alonso fellow for? He’s certainly not assisting with establishing a colony there.

JP: It would take a while to get going, King Midas. However, the year 1500 also sees new discoveries by Vespucci along the African coast.

discovernigeriabenin.jpg

Vespucci discovers new nations with Benin in the province of Nigeria. Sadly, they have no gold they we can see.

Goldfinger: I don’t see any gold there, Bond.

JP: Soon, Goldfinger. Let’s not get too hasty.

King Midas: (Pointing at the screen) Oh, what’s that?

tradecenterofsevilla.jpg

Trade explodes in the new center of Seville

JP: That is Spain’s new trade center in Andalusia. Isabel and Fernando also build a great royal wharf to launch plenty more expeditions. And, they were able to alter the domestic policy towards more innovative thought in 1501 as well.

Goldfinger: More innovating. Someone better innovate some gold around here!

JP: Coming up, Goldfinger. First we have trading posts sent out to Cartagena and Tortuga and a momentous occasion – that is, Fernando steps down as the head of the army at the start of 1502.

Goldfinger: My God man! What the hell is the matter with him? He’s still young!

King Midas: It is a bit odd.

JP: Things seemed to be peaceful as the new century began, and Isabel and Fernando must have decided to enjoy this time and focus on their newfound world than trouble with the goings on in Italia or France. And their new Spain was performing wonderfully. Their trade level moved to level three in 1502, as did their naval level the following year. And Alonso de Ojeda has moved from Puerto Rico to a newly established island called Cuba.

Goldfinger: At least there’s gambling. Finally something entertaining. Oh…don’t tell me the commies are already there?

JP: Not yet, Goldfinger. They name the newly established colony Moron in remembrance of Isabel’s dearly departed brother and the late King, Enrique IV.

King Midas: Appropriate, that.

JP: Yes, well…apparently not all of the peasants thought so as they had a bit of an uprising in response. Seems they didn’t find the tribute as amusing as the Catholic Kings did. But, we are rather lucky as we get a chance to ask the man himself. (stands and walks to center stage) Ladies and gentlemen, let’s meet tonight’s guest, Fernando, King of Spain!

Audience erupts with cheers and applause as Fernando walks out in a horrid red suit, c. 1977. The costume is given greater amusement by the fact that Fernando must weigh about 300 pounds.

Fernando: Larry…Larry…it’s wonderful to be here. (he walks right up to Jackie and plants a big kiss on his mouth.)

JP: King Fernando…(pulling away quickly) Please, sir. It’s a…wonderful to have you here.

Fernando: (thinking nothing is wrong and walking over to the couches) Well it’s great to be here. (stops and sees both King Midas and Goldfinger. He goes over to each and gives them great big hugs as he says) Midas old boy! Goldfinger…you old monkey! How the hell are ya?

JP: My King…please, let’s have a seat and discuss a few things…please…

Fernando: (calmly sitting now) Certainly, Larry. That’s a lovely blouse you are wearing…what color is that…purple?

JP: It’s white. And a black suit. Now let’s take a look at 1504. The year is punctuated by two pretty big events. Let’s go with the good first. In April of that year, the conquest of Cuba is complete, is it not?

coloniesinnewworld1504.jpg

Cuba is claimed for the empire

Fernando: (still looking at Jackie’s shirt) Well it’s lovely, whatever it is. Hmmm…Cuba….yes, it was finished. At least the groundwork was. Moron was humming along, and the other two were in the infant stages. Just like little babies…it takes time to grow strong, right?

JP: Umm…yes.

Goldfinger: (to King Midas) What the hell is this guy talking about?

JP: But the sad event of that year…very sad indeed…

Fernando: Yes…my darling bride met her untimely demise. She was aged, but still so young at heart…or mind…whatever, I don’t know…but she still had it at her age. In the end, I blame modern appliances. Once she had use of them, she was never the same back in Spain. Very heavy.

JP: That is sad indeed. So you stayed on as regent, yes?

Fernando: Well, our daughter, Juana officially inherited the throne of Castile. She had her old man, the deposed Duke of Burgundy, Philip. But he wasn’t much use. And as she was…touched, let’s say…I pretty much kept things going. I had some support though. And I needed it. Those first few months, I really couldn’t even get out of bed. I’m truly lost without her. Dark days, Larry. Very dark days.

JP: (looking at Fernando for a moment) I can see that. Perhaps discussing something more positive in 1505 might lighten the mood. Because I think this will lighten everyone’s mood. In March of 1505, Vespucci spots land and steps ashore long enough to hear stories from the natives that there is gold in the hills. For the first time in almost a century, Spain is aware that there is more gold in the world for them to conquer.

Spain has discovered gold in Leone

Fernando: It really was a beautiful sight, those first few blocks they brought back for me. It’s mesmerizing.

King Midas and Goldfinger: (dreamily) It sure is…

JP: So it seems that the post Isabel years were looked at as a new beginning in many ways. Did it spur any movement vis the rest of the continent, perhaps?

Fernando: Man…I really didn’t want to get involved in all that. The Papa kept trying to get me to go in on this, or back him on that. I would give him some lip service.

JP: Like here?

leagueofcambrai.jpg

The Pope rounds up a posse against Venice

Fernando: I suppose so. Look, it made me look good in the eyes of most of the other heads of Europe. So Venice got a little pissed. Hey, they had their little embargo in the late 90’s too. I never even noticed, really. They were more upset by it than I certainly was.

JP: So you had no true plans to actually fight?

Fernando: Of course not.

Goldfinger: Why are you sitting on your ass, man?

JP: Goldfinger, please…he is a guest.

Fernando: No man, I’ll answer it. Because I was in grief. Not only did I have the death of my wife to think about, but her favorite, Columbus died in 1506.

JP: As did Juana’s husband, Philip.

Goldfinger: But you had just reached land level three.

Fernando: (as if wisdom) And mine enemies were still higher…

Goldfinger: Well somebody is high around here, but it ain’t your enemies.

Fernando: Heavy waves, man. Yes, things were quiet. I liked it that way…OK? I did a little diplomacy with France, sent a letter occasionally to the Papa…and just basically enjoyed hearing from all of the adventurers that came through the court.

JP: You had many, sire. Juan Diaz de Solis showed up around this time too, didn’t he?

Fernando: Sure man, sure. The only problems I had in those years were noble related. They kept putting down their peasants and feuding with one another…it was getting to be a real drag.

JP: But still, you had the discovery of land on the South American coast in 1507. Aires was established as a trading post. And in 1509, the famous Balboa shows up searching for work.

Fernando: We sent him down to Leone to see about getting that whole thing set up. He did a pretty good job.

JP: And you ended the decade on a pretty high note, didn’t you?

Moroniscity.jpg

Mantanzas becomes a city in Moron

PuertoRicoiscity.jpg

San Juan becomes a city in Puerto Rico

Fernando: (glancing at Goldfinger) You bet, man. I didn’t need them negative waves because I played with positive ones. Two new cities rose up in the Caribbean, and Balboa set out for Leone in 1510. I was happy, my beautiful grandson was happy even if his momma was a little loony. The country seemed happy. I didn’t want war. I wanted gold.

King Midas: (enthralled) Yes, I can certainly see why. An outstanding job you’ve done, sir…if I may say so?

Fernando: No, man…go right ahead. It’s that positive stuff that keeps us keepin’ on, you dig?

King Midas: Oh yes…I…completely…I…uh, dig…(smiling)

Goldfinger: OK, is this love fest over? I have work to do. Glad you found the gold this time, pal. Let’s see you keep it up. That’s the difference between a mastermind and an amateur.

JP: (to the audience) Well, sad as it is to say, our time is up for this show. But we’ve enjoyed our guests and seen quite a bit of progress made today. And join us next time when we have the famous Balboa join us, and another young man I think you will all be impressed with. Don’t miss it, right here on “Quest!”

More gold. Excellent.

Looks like you've got a few gold places to grab easily:

--Leone, of course.
--Plenty of buildup in the Americas, perhaps intended to grab the Aztecs?
--Don't forget Tirol! FREE BADEN!

I always get a kick out of Goldfinger's lines, like this one. :) When the news came of the gold strike in Leone I thought all the judges would do high fives with each other.

Oh, dude. I first thought that Fernando had a little gay residing in him, but then I realized that it was a surfer-hippie instead. u dig, dude? :D

Nice to see some gold. I presume the aztecs are next? You have a couple of bases in the new world, so you can build troops there (small but still). btw, do you have a colonial navy to haul these troops around?

I'd always wondered about that province. :D Good going with the gold in Leone. :)

Looking forward to your version of Juana la Loca.

Yes, Goldfinger's lines are very good. You know, that movie is on wright now, and it was on a week or so ago, but both time someone else was in control of the television, and I did not wish to cause trouble. Actually, I am almost never in control of the tv but that is a good thing, since Goldfinger is frequently the only good thing on besides the news.

King Alfonso sounds pretty great, I wish we had a surfer king, like the philosopher kings of old, except a surfer.

I continue to think Nicholas Flamel would do well to make an appearance(s) on the show.

Geez, getting a little violent there, Director. Having flashbacks to your Wallachia game? :p

I noticed that Fernando choose to ignore his wife's suggestion to not wear the red suit. I tried to imagine it, but I just can't make it work. I can imagine a bright red disco suit, no problem there. But having it stretch to encompass a 300-pound man? Can't make it work. Sorry. It's a step too far for my imagination. :)

That African gold province, is that colonizable, or do you have to conquer it away from some heathen natives? How's the situation in America? I'm assuming it's getting a lot easier to scout out the coastline now that you have some local bases.

Good update!

Wallachia can't take on Austria, but it's not (yet) too late for Spain. Form a grand coalition with France if you have to... but kill them before they annex again!

I think naming the colony 'Moron' was Isabella's subtle dig at her husband, too.

Fb-fb:

Still hit heavy with this bug, but let's answer some feedback.

JM - Absolutely more gold to deal with. All will be taken care of in good time. Still pondering the Tyrol question.

jwolf - And Goldfinger appreciates it. :D Let's just say everyone was very, very happy to strike gold.

Ciçatrix - Yes, the Caribbean empire is moving along well. I am pleased with the progress even though it got started later than I wanted it to. It's still earlier than historically, I think.

Snake IV - Yes, if I were at home every day at that time, but normally I am not.

Deus - Actually, Fernando was patterned half on Marlon Brando and half on an aging hippie. As for the navy, yes, I have a sizable navy that has been servicable. I was working on getting it larger though, and will continue to do so.

Fiftypence - Well, it seemed to fit. :D

Grundius - Sadly, I don't think we'll be seeing Juana the mad. I just don't have anywhere to put her, unfortunately. But Balboa - I considered going the Rocky route, but that would be too easy. Still working on it.

J. Passepartout - Yes, and those waves off the coast of Spain are killers, dude! Hang like twenty, you know?

Hajji - I'm not sure Fernando knew what was going on either, frankly. ;)

Stuyvesant - Well, it just happens to be his favorite suit. And probably best you cannot visualize it. As for the province, yes it is available for colonization. Check the next couple of updates for more on that.

Director - A coalition with France is hardly needed just yet. Even with four provinces, I think I can easily do some damage to Austria. The question is, do I DoW twice to annex, or DoW once, make them vassals and then annex down the line. That risks them getting perhaps too big to annex though. Still thinking on it.

And as I said, I am still pretty zonked with this damn bug. I got zero writing done yesterday and so far have little to show for today. But I am leaving work early again and might be able to scribble a little down just to get us to about 1515 or so. I can't promise anything though. My head might very well explode the way it feels and then I doubt seriously that an update will be forthcoming today. Or I could lose all of my precious bodily fluids out of my nose that I cannot seem to catch and that may also hinder update possibilities. But I will do what I can. Thanks for reading and commenting everyone!

EDIT - OK, I got something scribbled out. It's coming up.

I think you should take a pause if you have to. Qualtiy is better than quantity (which also if pretty good. But still)

Quest: The Spanish Search For Gold

Gold1.jpg

Episode Xa: In This Corner…

Jackie Powers: Hello and welcome once again to your favorite show, “Quest!” We are joined today by the famous Spanish conquistador, Balboa. (sitting on the couches with Balboa, a medium sized man wearing period dress, helmet included.) Now first tell me why just the one name? Were you inspired by the likes of Sting? Cher? Taupin, before he changed it back to Bernie Taupin?

Balboa: No, no, nothing like that. No one wanted to keep writing the little symbol in my first name so I just dropped it. Makes it much easier to call after me.

JP: I see. Very good. So we last saw you boarding a boat and ready to set sail for Leone. How was the voyage?

Balboa: Mostly calm, Johnny. A few storms along the way, but we made it by April.

Heard offstage: Damn woman!

JP: Just about the time a rival arrived in Havana, yes? One Panfilo de Narvaez?

Balboa: I would hardly call him a rival.

JP: Even though he got the better pickings in the southern lands of the new world?

Balboa: I was to claim gold for my beloved kings. I could think of little better than that?

JP: A good point. So you felt good about your chances once you arrived in Leone. Things got off to a good start?

Balboa: I figured it was a 50/50 chance when we landed, frankly Johnny. OK…maybe 52/48 we succeed. But I was proud to name the new colony Manzanillo for their majesties Isabel and Fernando. I think she would have wanted to see the new discoveries.

Leone becomes a colony

JP: Yes. Rather sad that Isabel wasn’t able to see the fruits of her labors, so to speak. And you surely had to be somewhat vindicated by seeing the…less than stellar exploits of your counterparts, to put it mildly.

Balboa: I really have to tell you, Johnny; I didn’t pay that much attention. I knew Narvaez was having a little trouble in some place called Cartagena…

JP: Three failed attempts at colonizing is a bit more than a little…

Balboa: Of course…but truly I was quite pleased with my own position. There was quite a bit of gold pouring out of the ground before more colonists even arrived. And little I could do to assist in the new world.

JP: One thing that perhaps might have helped you were the natives that had already encountered a slight Portuguese presence, yes?

Balboa: One might say that. I was able to get on fairly well with the local populace when I arrived.

JP: Even took one as a mistress, did you not?

Balboa: Now see here, Johnny. I think that’s a pretty tacky thing to ask.

JP: Perhaps you are right…Balboa. I do apologize. And I’m also sad to say that our time is up. No great loss since you’ve not said one funny thing at all, but wonderful having you anyway.

Balboa: (slightly confused) Yes…of course…wonderful to be here.

JP: We look forward to following your progress in Leone. (walking across the stage to the judges stand) Well that was instructing.

Tim the Leprechaun: More like a hammer in the head, I’d say.

JP: Yes, well…(to the audience) We have all of our judges here today and let’s start with you King Midas. Tell us your thoughts as we near the hundred-year mark.

King Midas: I think it’s been slow but steady progress. They have had some bad breaks along the way, but all in all, I like what I see.

JP: And how about you, Steve?

Steve the Pirate: Argh! ‘Tis breakin’ Steve the Pirate’s heart to see such failure on the part of ye gold seekin’. One province in a hundred year ain’t be much to yell about. Argh!

Goldfinger: And they’ve been quiet for too long. There’s still work to be done expanding the realm at home.

JP: Interesting that you should say that, Goldfinger. Take a look…

Goldfinger: Well that cleans up nice and tidy. Except for the green…

King Midas: And I suppose you’d invade our dearest friends just because of their color?

Goldfinger: The only color I care about is golden yellow.

Steve the Pirate: Argh! That be true to Steve the Pirate as well. Argh!

Tim the Leprechaun: I dunno…did always like the green too.

JP: Gentlemen, can we get back on track? We didn’t get a chance to ask Balboa his reaction, but perhaps one of you would like to comment on this…

King Midas: Another discovery. See there, Goldfinger. It is silent on the home front exactly because they are investing so much in discovery.

Goldfinger: Looks to me like he’s losing that battle, Midas. Let’s just hope their little adventures don’t cost them too much time when things start shaking on the continent. And they will, believe me.

JP: Speaking of cost, in December of 1513, Spain has a loan come due and they are forced to take another in order to pay it. And in 1514, they would find a merchant family that would become very integral to the house of the heir apparent, Charles, or as Fernando called him, Little Carlos.

King Midas: Is that the mad woman’s child?

Goldfinger: Yes, Midas. If you’d pay attention, you might just learn something. That’s the trouble with you Kings. Always talking when you should be listening. I could teach you a thing or two about listening…

JP: Goldfinger…if we could move on?

Goldfinger: (still eying King Midas) Be my guest.

JP: Well, we find ourselves in 1515, and the beginning of the year begins on a rather sad note. El Gran Capitan has passed away in Emelia.

El Gran Capitan dies in Italia and is mourned for doing very little in his career

Tim the Leprechaun: Now what did he do again?

Steve the Pirate: Argh! He be good for nothin’, the lazy git. There be war to make and he rests his laurels stuffin’ his face with pasta. Argh! It makes Steve the Pirate sick!

Goldfinger: I have to agree with my pirate friend, here. I am struggling to come up with one thing he’s done for his Kingdom.

King Midas: Well, he did help clean up some rebellion back in his early years.

JP: But the consensus is, dear El Gran Capitan was not so ‘El Gran.’ However, there were still other things to bring Fernando out of his grief. The discovery of Table on the seeming tip of Africa was discovered in May of 1515. A trading company was immediately sent but rebuffed.

Goldfinger: Must be the blue pots. See, if they were a golden yellow color…

JP: You might be right, Goldfinger, because a second trading company failed to make a dent in the native market later in the year. But the worst news came in November. The refinery in Andalusia caught fire and burnt to the ground.

Steve the Pirate: Argh!…..just, Argh!

Tim the Leprechaun: Oh…and they made good spirits, too. Sad that is.

JP: Yes, Fernando felt very much that way as well. Turns out they made his favorite vintage. He had just purchased several barrels of Andalusian ’79, and as it was, they were now the last of a once great refinery. The fire would depress him so that he fell into a downward spiral. One so devastating that a tragic event took place…and find out what that was when we come back from the break, right here on “Quest!”

The first hundred years are always the slowest. Other than recommending that you explore like mad while you can I can't offer any other advice. Well there is Austria but you'll figure out how to handle that I'm sure.

Joe

Edit: Just noticed that you've been taking loans. Is there a money problem? If so are you going to build mostly trading posts and selectively build provinces into cities to save money?

I've always hated that Devastating Fire event. It's completely unfair, especially so early in the game.

Devastating fire is the single most annoying event in the game, I agree. Now if the one that gave a manufactory for free fired as often, I could live with it.It might be just a coincidence, but in my games it rarely does.
