Dev Diary 5 Production Lines offered some very tasty insights into the process of manufacturing equipment that is used to outfit fighting units.
But I have a question regarding finished Equipment.
Is it possible to further refine equipment already built?
For example, Germany's first foray into Self-Propelled Anti-Tank vehicles, the Panzerjaeger I, took place in 1940, well after the last Panzer I rolled off the production line (Panzer I production ended before war began). It consisted of taking already built Panzer I chassies and adapting them to fit a "casemate" containing a 47mm AT gun.
The same system could be applied for up-gunning of vehicles. Not all up-gunned variants were new vehicles built from scratch, some kept the chassis and simply replaced the gun. Same for up-armored vehicles. In some cases, armored was simply bolted-on the existing chassis.
The Panzer III is a perfect example of Germany's attempt to get he most of their designs by incrementally up-gunning and up-armoring existing vehicles.
So what I am asking is if alongside the standard "Production Line" which has IC as Input and Equipment as Output, there also exists an "Equipment Refit Line" where the Input is IC + also Existing Equipment and the Output is the Upgraded Equipment?
Such "Equipment Refit Lines" could serve to better model not just the incremental improvements for land vehicles that nations undertook, especially Germany who tried to get the most of its tank designs, but can also serve beautifully in modelling the progress made for Fighter Aircraft, where existing airframes had new life breathed into them by having better engines fitted.
Is this something that Paradox intends to implement, or is it deemed as outside the scope of HOI IV?
